Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear landlord,
I hope you are doing well. Although we both agreed on the six-month agreement for the apartment, I would now like to live here for some more time as there are few reasons which I would share with you.
As you know I was looking for work when we last me about five months ago, I got a full-time permanent job. I am currently working as a Chemical Technician in a waste management company called GFL. Since I have studied chemistry, this is quite suitable job for my career. Fortunately, it is closer to the apartment and the drive is approximately 10-15 minutes which is really convenient and easy to commute.
With your permission, i would like to extend the agreement from 6 month to 1-2 years. This apartment is spacious and I have spent some time here is the reason I prefer to live here. It even have beautiful backyard, and the neighbors are very kind and helpful. However the main problem is the dryer machine for clothes. It is not generating enough heat and making extra noise which is also quite disturbing for others. Hope you can do something about that.
Your understanding regarding this matter would be much appreciated. Let me know if anything else is needed from my side. Thank you.
Best wishes,
Utsav

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly stated your intention to extend the lease, provided a logical explanation regarding your new job, and identified the specific issue with the dryer. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. To reach a higher band, ensure that your opening is more direct; for example, instead of saying 'there are few reasons which I would share with you,' you could state your purpose more concisely. Overall, the message is clear, and the reader understands your requirements perfectly.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with clear paragraph breaks. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Since,' 'Fortunately,' and 'However,' to link ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly. For instance, the transition between discussing your job and requesting the extension could be smoother. Additionally, some referencing is slightly repetitive. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow, and the structure is appropriate for a formal letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'permanent job,' 'convenient,' and 'spacious.' There are some minor word choice errors, such as 'last me' (should be 'last met') and 'quite suitable job' (should be 'a quite suitable job'). While you successfully convey your meaning, the vocabulary is somewhat functional. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations or slightly more sophisticated descriptors to enhance the professional tone of your request.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'It even have' (should be 'It even has'), 'there are few reasons' (should be 'a few reasons'), and 'the drive is... easy to commute' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally acceptable, though there are some missing articles and minor subject-verb agreement issues. These errors do not impede communication, but they do prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for these small errors will significantly improve your score.
