Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mr. Brown,
I am Monika Patel. I am your tenant residing in 200 Bay Apartment since five months. I am writing to request you for the extension of my stay for another few months. However, the lease agreement was for six-month.
I want to rent this apartment for another six months. The reason behind the changed is that my son is studying in the University which is located vicinity to the apartment. Moreover, he is in the last semester and is going to finish his studies in five months. So, it will be convenient and finish hie final year.
I would like to inform about one problem that we are facing is that the main door lock is so hard so while closing the door I have to push harder to lock the door and which disturbs the people who are sleeping because I have a early morning job. I would highly recommend to look upon this matter at your earliest convenience. I am looking forward for your prompt response.
Yours sincerely,
Monika Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: the duration of the extension, the reason for the change, and the maintenance issue. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation regarding the son's university proximity is clear, but the description of the door lock issue could be more precise to ensure the landlord understands the urgency. Overall, the response fulfills the task requirements effectively, though it lacks the depth of detail that would elevate it to a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each addressing a specific requirement of the prompt. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. For example, the transition 'Moreover' is used, but the overall flow between sentences could be improved with a wider variety of linking words. Referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel slightly disjointed due to basic sentence structures. The letter follows a standard formal structure, which aids in its overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the message to be conveyed clearly. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'residing in 200 Bay Apartment since five months' (should be 'for five months') and 'located vicinity to' (should be 'in the vicinity of'). While the student attempts to use appropriate formal language, the range is somewhat limited, and there are minor errors in word choice and collocation. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the response from reaching a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the lease agreement was for six-month' (should be 'six months'), 'the reason behind the changed' (should be 'the change'), and 'I have a early morning job' (should be 'an early'). Additionally, the sentence 'So, it will be convenient and finish hie final year' is grammatically incomplete and confusing. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors indicates a need for more careful proofreading and better control over complex sentence construction.
