Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Hopper,

I hope you are doing well, i am writing this letter in regards to our rent agreement. five months ago we mutually decided for an six-month agreement, however i would like to extend the agreement for another year.

Initially, my contract was for an half year with my organization. I recently got promoted as an permanent full timer. I would like to renew my rent agreement for another year. This apartment is near to my company therefore the commute is very convenient for me. My family would be also coming from next month to stay with me and i believe this apartment is worth continuing for rent as it had high security. Connectivity is also good from this location and we can easily get any basic groceries from nearby store.

Although, i would like to request you to replace the geyser, the geyser is not working from past 3 weeks. it is one of the measure issue in day to day life. I did not told you before as i was suppose to leave the apartment, however now i would be staying for a longer period i would like a immediate solution.

I am looking forward for your response.

Thank you so much for your cooperation.

Regards,

Payal Mehta

Your Tenant

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly stated the desired extension period, provided a logical reason for the change in plans (a promotion to a permanent position), and identified a specific maintenance issue (the geyser). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, ensuring the reader understands your situation and your request. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between the request for an extension and the maintenance issue is slightly smoother, as the shift in topic feels a bit abrupt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'however', 'therefore', and 'although' to link ideas. However, the paragraphing is slightly inconsistent; the maintenance issue should ideally be in its own paragraph to separate it from the request for the lease extension. Additionally, some referencing is slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect your reasons for staying with the description of the apartment.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'mutually', 'convenient', and 'cooperation'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'measure issue' (should be 'major issue') and 'did not told you' (should be 'did not tell you'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Attempting to use more sophisticated collocations related to property management or professional life would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. Examples include 'i am writing' (capitalization error), 'an six-month' (incorrect article usage), 'an half year' (incorrect article), and 'i was suppose to' (should be 'supposed to'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on basic subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and ensuring consistent capitalization of the pronoun 'I'.
