Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Harry,

I hope you are doing well last time when we had a conversation on call you said you had mild fever and cold. Something urgent has come up from work place instead of working for only 6 months now i have to continue for a longer period of time as I have been promoted for permanent position in the firm I work for. Glady i have accepted this offer and will continue for the company for more then 6 months. Therefore, I would ask you to expand the agreement dates for atleast 24 months. Moreover, living here makes me comfortable without having second thought. Everything which i needed is at a walking distance such mall, gym and grocery store for my daily needs.

However, I would urge you to urgently look into kitchen windows sliding as I'm having difficulties in closing it. Recently, i have been noticing flies and coachrouches running around. Please fix this issue as soon as possible as I don't want any of them coming in our kitchen and making me sick. Once you are well please do write or call me regarding your health and the agreement topic. Have a great weekend coming ahead.

Sincerely,

Hiren Darji

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the duration of the extension, the reason for the change, and the maintenance issue. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are clearly presented and the purpose of the letter is immediately evident. However, the development of the ideas is somewhat brief. While the reason for staying is clear, the request for a 24-month extension is quite specific and could have been supported with a bit more detail regarding the stability of your new position. Overall, the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Paragraphing is used to separate the request from the maintenance issue, which helps the reader follow the flow of information. Cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'Moreover', and 'However' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, though the connection between the opening health inquiry and the main purpose of the letter is a bit abrupt. Overall, the progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'permanent position' and 'walking distance' are used appropriately. However, there are some spelling errors, such as 'Glady' (gladly), 'coachrouches' (cockroaches), and 'more then' (more than). Additionally, some word choices are slightly awkward, such as 'expand the agreement dates' instead of 'extend the lease'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precision in word choice and attention to spelling to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I hope you are doing well last time' (tense inconsistency), 'instead of working for only 6 months now i have to continue' (punctuation and structure), and 'such mall' (missing 'as'). Furthermore, there are issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement, such as 'in our kitchen'. While the meaning remains clear, the frequency of these errors prevents a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would significantly improve your writing.
