IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Adam,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter regarding rent agreement. When I leased this apartment we agreed upon six month, but after spending five months I feel like I would like to extend the rental agreement.

I would like to request an extension of one year more for my lease. As mentioned earlier, that I would be changing my university for my second course, but now I am still enrolled in same university for my second course and have postponed my plan to change the university, as I got a seat in the same collage and the fees are also bit less as compared to other universities. I would continue here and wish to extend my lease.

One more thing I would like to inform about the unit is that there is an issue with the water supply in kitchen sink. When I looked into it I figured it out that there is a leak in the pipe which is connected to the inner chamber of the sink.

So, I hope you would look into this problem and would agree in extending a lease agreement.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Regards,

Alex

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly stated the desired extension period (one year), provided a logical explanation for your change in plans regarding your university studies, and described the specific maintenance issue with the kitchen sink. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between the explanation of your plans and the introduction of the maintenance issue is slightly smoother to improve the overall flow of the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You have used basic cohesive devices such as 'As mentioned earlier' and 'One more thing' to link your ideas. However, the paragraphing could be more effective; the second paragraph is quite dense and covers two distinct topics (the lease extension and the maintenance issue). Separating the maintenance issue into its own paragraph would improve the visual and logical organization of the letter. Additionally, some transitions between sentences feel slightly mechanical, but the overall progression of information is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'lease agreement', 'enrolled', and 'postponed'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'collage' (which should be 'college') and 'bit less' (which is slightly informal). While you successfully convey your meaning, the vocabulary is generally functional rather than sophisticated. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations or slightly more formal alternatives to common phrases to demonstrate a wider range of lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'agreed upon six month' (should be 'six months'), 'same collage' (spelling error), and 'agree in extending' (should be 'agree to extend'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the reader's understanding of your message. You have a good grasp of basic sentence construction, but you need to focus on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage to improve your accuracy. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures would also help elevate your score.
