Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Ravinder,
I am writing letter for requesting you to extend my rent lease. As per the agreement my rent duration was supposed only for six months, unfortunately I end up with an situation so I have to extend my rent agreement additional six months.
As I shifted here for my further education and my course duration was only for four months which I finished with excellent grades, and I got job offer letter from InfoSys which is located in Ahmedabad and my current residence is very close to my workplace. So I have decided to extending the agreement.
Although, despite having location advantage, I found out some problems that I have to discuss with you. First and foremost is the poor air ventilation and water leakage which I was facing since five months. Another one is regarding to the neighbour which make loud noise and prevent me in focusing on my job work.
Thank for your precious time, I am looking after your response.
Your sincerely,
Dirgh Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: the duration of the extension, the reason for the change in plans, and the mention of apartment problems. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation regarding the job offer is clear, but the description of the apartment problems (ventilation, leakage, and noise) is quite brief. To reach a higher band, you should provide slightly more detail on how these issues affect your daily life or what specific repairs you are requesting, ensuring the letter feels like a complete and professional communication.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost' and 'Although', which assist in transitioning between ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'Another one is regarding to the neighbour'. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect your thoughts more naturally. Overall, the structure is coherent and serves the purpose of the task effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'agreement', 'residence', and 'workplace'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and minor collocation errors, such as 'I am writing letter for requesting' (should be 'to request'), 'I end up with an situation' (should be 'I found myself in a situation'), and 'job work' (which is redundant). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over common English collocations and formal phrasing to reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'As I shifted here for my further education and my course duration was only for four months which I finished with excellent grades'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and prepositions, such as 'I have decided to extending' (should be 'to extend'), 'regarding to' (should be 'regarding'), and 'I am looking after your response' (should be 'looking forward to'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Increasing your accuracy in sentence construction will significantly improve your score.
