Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Sharma

I am writing to inform you that I want to extent my apartment agreement to next year. I kindly request you to allow me live here longer that I agreed.

I have been living in this apartment for almost five months. But, now i am planning to stay here for one year atleast as I am happy that I lived the best months of my life since i moved in this place.

I love staying here as it is near to my workplace my also my friends live in the same building so we sometimes go to the cafe which is on ground floor of this building.

However, I want to let you know that there is one problem in the air conditioner of my room which is not working well from almost a week. I request you to fix it as soon as possible.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours Sincerely

Kamal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points: the duration of the extension, the reason for the change, and the issue with the air conditioner. The tone is appropriate for a formal request to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the reason for the change is stated as being 'happy' and living the 'best months of my life,' which is a bit vague. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details about your circumstances, such as a change in work contract or personal stability. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each addressing a specific requirement of the prompt. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat limited and occasionally mechanical. For example, the transition 'But, now i am planning' is informal and slightly abrupt. Using more sophisticated linking words or phrases such as 'Furthermore,' 'Consequently,' or 'In addition to this' would improve the flow and help connect your ideas more fluidly. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'apartment agreement' and 'workplace.' However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'extent' instead of 'extend' and 'live here longer that I agreed' instead of 'than I agreed.' The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the variety and precision required for higher bands. To improve, try to incorporate more specific collocations related to renting and maintenance, such as 'lease renewal' or 'malfunctioning appliance.'

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('my also my friends live') and punctuation errors (missing commas after introductory phrases). Additionally, there are minor slips such as 'atleast' (should be two words) and 'from almost a week' (should be 'for almost a week'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic tense consistency and preposition usage would be beneficial.
