Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir,

I am writing this letter regarding the apartment which I am renting would wish to extend for certain reason.

Well we agreed for six months contract which I would like to extend, reason I could not find another apartment which was close to my work place so i decide to extend this flat for some more months. I might extend for another six months and by that time will find another flat for myself.

However, I would like to be in this flat because reason the facilities are good and main thing its close to my workplace. Another reason is I have very good neighbour who are very helpful and sober. Respectively sometimes they even send hot food to me because I am single.

Just one thing I would like to inform that the garden which behind the apartment is not clean and looks very untidy so it is my humble request to please look in to it so that on spare time we can have good sitting and relax ourself thank you .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task: you specified the desired extension length, explained the change in plans, and reported a maintenance issue. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation regarding the garden issue is brief and lacks a formal tone appropriate for a letter to a landlord. While the purpose of the letter is clear, the overall tone is inconsistent, shifting between informal and slightly awkward phrasing. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is expanded with more detail and that the tone remains consistently professional throughout the correspondence.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. You rely heavily on simple transitions like 'Another reason is' and 'However'. Some sentences are run-on or lack proper punctuation, such as the final sentence which lacks a full stop and proper sentence structure. Improving the flow between sentences by using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in addition to this') would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your needs clearly. You use some relevant terms such as 'contract', 'workplace', and 'facilities'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'sober' (which is likely a misuse of the word in this context) and 'on spare time'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat restricted, and you rely on basic descriptors. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and topic-specific vocabulary related to property management and formal requests.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Issues include missing articles ('the' garden), incorrect verb forms ('i decide' instead of 'I have decided'), and punctuation errors, particularly the lack of sentence boundaries in the final paragraph. While your meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that every sentence has a clear subject and a correctly conjugated verb.
