IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter regarding the leased apartment where I am residing now. Actually, as per our agreement the lease is going to be detained by this month. However, due to some other commitments I want to get extension of 6 months more.

Initially I rented this apartment for the duration of my studies, nevertheless, the company where I was working part time, has offered me a full time position owing to which I am planning to live here for a long time. On the top of that, this apartment is in the walking distance from my work place so it is very convenient to commute. Additionally, this adobe is tidy and comfortable which not only welcoming for guests but also satisfying for me.

Although, the apartment is well equipped, there is one issue that I am facing since long time. The heating system appears to be malfunctioning and needs to be inspected. Please arrange a technician to diagnose it thoroughly.

It would be appreciated if this matter will be resolved in urgency. I am looking forward to hear from you.

Best regards,

Rajpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly stated the desired extension period, provided a logical reason for the change in plans (a new full-time job), and identified a specific maintenance issue (the heating system). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening and closing salutations are consistent with the level of formality required, as 'Dear Sir' is quite generic when addressing a landlord.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. You have used a variety of cohesive devices such as 'however', 'owing to which', 'on the top of that', and 'additionally' to link your ideas. The progression of information is smooth and easy to follow. One minor improvement would be to ensure that the transition between the request for an extension and the mention of the apartment problem is slightly more natural, as the shift is currently a bit abrupt. Overall, the paragraphing is effective and supports the flow of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, such as 'residing', 'malfunctioning', and 'convenient to commute'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice. For example, 'detained' is incorrectly used to mean 'ended' or 'concluded', and 'adobe' is a misspelling of 'abode'. Additionally, 'on the top of that' is slightly informal; 'furthermore' or 'moreover' would be more suitable for a formal letter. Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and effectively throughout the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'the lease is going to be detained by this month' (should be 'ending this month') and 'since long time' (should be 'for a long time'). The phrase 'I am looking forward to hear from you' should be 'I am looking forward to hearing from you'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on verb tense consistency and the correct use of prepositions.
