Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Matheus,

I am writing this letter to extend my tenancy and discuss some issues which I am facing currently.

As per the aggrement next month which is september, sould have been my last month in an appartment but I am looking to extend it for two more months which will be 30th november 2026 because of the accesibility to the college. I will be finishing my graduation course in november which was the primary reason for me to reside in this area and later i will be returning my hometown. Another reason is, it is really accesible to all basic amenities like grocery stores, walkin clinics and more.

However, i want to inform you that yesterday there was some leak under the sink area which requires immediate attention to prevent major damage.

I hope you are happy to accomodate tenancy extention and the request for maintanance is treated on priority bases.

Thanking you,

Yashkuamr Bhoi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state the desired extension period, explain the reasoning related to your college graduation, and report the maintenance issue regarding the sink leak. The tone is appropriate for a formal request to a landlord. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of your plans is slightly more detailed and that the transition between the extension request and the maintenance issue is smoother. Overall, the task is fully addressed and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear opening, body, and closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'However' and 'Another reason is' to link your ideas. Paragraphing is present, though the structure could be improved by separating the maintenance request into its own distinct paragraph to enhance readability. Some referencing is slightly repetitive, and the flow between sentences could be more sophisticated. Nevertheless, the progression of ideas is easy to follow, and the letter maintains a consistent focus on the request throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'tenancy', 'amenities', and 'immediate attention'. However, there are several spelling errors (e.g., 'aggrement', 'sould', 'appartment', 'accesibility', 'accomodate', 'maintanance', 'Yashkuamr') that detract from the overall quality. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring the correct spelling of common business-related terms to move into a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing this letter to extend my tenancy and discuss some issues which I am facing currently.' There are several grammatical slips, such as 'it is really accesible to all basic amenities' (missing subject/preposition) and 'returning my hometown' (missing preposition 'to'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors with capitalization and missing articles. The errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Increasing the variety of complex structures and correcting basic subject-verb agreement will help improve your score.
