Student answer (Band 7.5)

Task-1

Dear Miss Mehra,

I hope this letter finds you well. I know you are supposed to come to the apartment at the end of this month but I am writing this to express my interest regarding extension of my lease as I wish to stay here for longer than the six month agreement.

However, I am supposed to leave this apartment by 30th of September as my six-month agreement is coming to an end but now I am planning to stay here for 3 more months i.e. till 31st of December. I am informing you this now as I am afraid that you could have found new tenant.

In addition, I want to highlight that this place has become a home for me. At first, I was planning to move to another province 'Alberta' but now I have extended my studies for three more months. So, I do not want to shift anywhere else as I have made a strong bond with you and my neighbours. Also it would be difficult for me to move all my stuff.

Furthermore, I just want to inform you that there is a small leakage in the laundry room in one of the taps. Whenever it rains, the laundry room gets filled with water. Consequently, there are many mosquitos after it rains. So, I would really appreciate it if you could solve this issue. I hope you do not have any issue regarding extension of my apartment's lease.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Kunwar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly stated the desired extension period (three months), provided a logical reason for the change (extended studies), and included the required information about the maintenance issue (the leaking tap). The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. You have maintained a consistent position throughout the response, ensuring the reader understands your request and the context surrounding it. No further development was required to meet the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your narrative easily. You have used a variety of cohesive devices such as 'However', 'In addition', 'Furthermore', and 'Consequently' to link your sentences and paragraphs effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a letter format. While some transitions are quite standard, they are used accurately and contribute to the overall flow of the text. The referencing is clear throughout, and the structure supports the communication of your message without any confusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. You use some specific terms like 'lease', 'tenant', and 'province' correctly. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'made a strong bond with you' (better: 'built a good relationship') and 'solve this issue' (better: 'repair the leak'). While these do not impede communication, they prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher band. You have successfully avoided repetition and used a range of words that are appropriate for the context of a rental agreement.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures throughout the letter. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I am informing you this now as I am afraid that you could have found new tenant' (missing article 'a' and awkward phrasing) and 'there are many mosquitos' (spelling: 'mosquitoes'). Additionally, the phrase 'I hope you do not have any issue regarding extension' is slightly unnatural. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not cause difficulty for the reader. You have good control over punctuation and sentence structure, which keeps the writing readable and professional.
