Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr Adit Raj,

I am requesting to write a letter regarding, i would like to mention we have a six-month agreement for renting an apartment. So, our agreement will end up on next month, however i wish to stay in the apartment for two years; effectively from October 2026 to September 2028.

Actually when i was coming here my plan was only do 6 months internship course in DDH hospital. Now i would like to pursue my PG course in the same hospital because of these amenities and exposure are excellent. Therefore, these facilities enhances my skills and knowledge.

I really appreciate your facilities in the apartment, however i have minor problem with leakage water in the kitchen since August. If you could send plumber to repair, it would be easy to finish my daily kitchen work.

Thank you, please try to consider my request. I will wait for your promot.

Yours sincerely,

Chindam Manasa

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the desired duration of the extension, the reason for the change in plans, and the maintenance issue. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal request to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the explanation regarding the PG course could be more clearly linked to the request for a two-year extension. While the task is fully covered, the expression of these points lacks the sophistication required for a higher band score. The purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, and the reader is left with no ambiguity regarding the writer's intentions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. There is a clear progression of ideas from the request to the explanation and finally the maintenance issue. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Therefore', 'However', and 'Actually', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The use of referencing is generally clear, although the sentence structure in the opening paragraph is a bit disjointed. Overall, the information is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, which supports the coherence of the message.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are some attempts at using more specific vocabulary, such as 'amenities', 'exposure', and 'pursue', which is positive. However, there are instances of awkward word choice and minor errors, such as 'leakage water' instead of 'a water leak' and 'wait for your promot' instead of 'wait for your prompt response'. These errors do not impede communication, but they highlight a need for more precise control over collocations and word forms to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is consistently clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the' missing before 'plumber'), verb tenses ('I am requesting to write' is unnatural), and subject-verb agreement ('these facilities enhances'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some issues with comma splices and sentence boundaries. The errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding the message. To improve, the writer should focus on basic sentence construction and proofreading for common grammatical slips.
