IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Amrik,

I am writing this letter to request about extending lease of the apartment 65 royal palm tower unit number 203, which i agreed for 6 months to increase for 1 year.

Actually, i promised for six months but now i have decided one year to live in this apartment. I do not know how time passes so fast here

i change my mind to live here because my parents are coming next month and they love to live in spacious place as this apartment is so big and beautiful so i donot want to move anywhere else than living here with my family. Also, my cousins live in brampton so when my parents will show up here then obviously my cousins will also come to see them so i need enough space for all of them.

However, there is only one issue which i am having now is the door bell, which is not working from so long, i told you before but you promised me that will be replaced next week but it is been a month that nobody comes to fix that, so could you please look forward that.

Hoping you will give me approval on my one year stay here.

Yours faithfully,

Deep

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: you specified the desired extension period, explained the change in your plans regarding your parents' visit, and reported the broken doorbell. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat informal and repetitive. For example, the explanation regarding your parents and cousins could be more concisely phrased to improve the flow. While all requirements are met, the response would benefit from a more professional structure and a clearer, more formal tone to fully meet the expectations of a Band 7 or higher.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. You rely heavily on simple connectors like 'also' and 'however'. Some transitions between sentences are abrupt, such as the jump from discussing your parents to the doorbell issue. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to create a smoother progression of ideas. The paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs could be more cohesive to ensure a more professional flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your needs clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'extending lease' and 'spacious'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'show up here' (which is too informal) and 'look forward that' (which is grammatically incorrect). To reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise and varied vocabulary, avoiding repetitive phrasing like 'live here' and 'living here'. Expanding your range to include more formal collocations would significantly enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'which i agreed for 6 months to increase for 1 year', 'nobody comes to fix that', and 'not working from so long'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of capital letters for 'I' and the lack of proper sentence boundaries. While these errors do not prevent the message from being understood, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a better grasp of verb tenses and sentence construction.
