Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear, Mr. Mike

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to request about extend rent agreement for 1 year.

I know that our agreement is for only six month. But after living 2 month here , I have realized that this community is more convenient as I can easily find reliable transportation for daily commute to my work. Apart from that, shopping mall and grocery store are just 5 km away from the apartment. the one thing is more interesting that the rent of this apartment is more reasonable as compared to others. You know that I am an international student so I can work only 24 hours per week . Therefore, it is more beneficial for me to live here as I have to spend a small amount of money for the rent.

However, I want to share a few issues with this apartment that need to be solve. First of all, the front door lock is not working properly that need to be fix immidietly as this is about safety concern. Moreover, there is a voice of loud speakers from the second floor during night and it is very annoying for me as I can not get enough sleep. Consequently, I can not focus on my work and study in the next day. So that, I just need your help to solve these issues as soon as possible.

I am looking forward to hearing from you. Please let me inform what is your decision about extend rent agreement.

Best Regards

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: requesting an extension, explaining the change in plans, and reporting maintenance issues. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation for the change in plans is more fully developed; while you mention convenience and cost, adding a bit more detail about your personal circumstances or the specific benefits of the location would strengthen the response. Overall, the task is fully addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices like 'Apart from that', 'However', and 'Consequently' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the flow between sentences is smoother. For example, the transition between the rent discussion and the maintenance issues could be more fluid.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use terms like 'convenient', 'reliable transportation', and 'reasonable' effectively. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'request about extend' (request an extension) and 'voice of loud speakers' (noise from loud speakers). Additionally, there are minor spelling errors like 'immidietly'. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and proofreading for spelling mistakes. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise descriptive terms would also enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and articles, such as 'need to be solve' (need to be solved) and 'in the next day' (the next day). There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and missing articles (e.g., 'shopping mall' should be 'the shopping mall'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on mastering basic sentence construction and proofreading for tense consistency.
