IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.
Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter
- say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
- explain why your plans have changed
- tell the owner about a problem in the apartment
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear mr smith,
I hope you are doing great. I am writing this letter to you for renting the apartment for another 6 months. We originally agreed for 6 months and its already 5 months but i like this apartment and wanted to stay for more months.
From very first day, i like this apartment so much and now it feels like a home to me where i can relax completely and everything feels mine. I decorate and arrange the stuff according to my convenience and now i am habitual to it. The second reason is that everything is so convenient from here like superstores, bus stand, salon and many more. Furthermore, i want to discuss about the washing machine for clothes. It has a water leakage which creates a huge problem whenever i wash my clothes. I hope you will look into this matter and let me know if you need any further details from me to extend the agreement.
Thankyou
Yours sincerely
Sukhpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly stated the desired extension period, provided a logical explanation for your change in plans, and identified a specific maintenance issue regarding the washing machine. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. To reach a higher band, ensure that the purpose of the letter is stated more clearly in the opening sentence and that the transition between the request to stay and the maintenance issue is smoother. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized, with a clear progression from the request to the reasons and finally the maintenance issue. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'The second reason is', which help the reader follow your argument. However, the paragraphing is somewhat limited; the entire body of the letter is contained in one block. Breaking the text into distinct paragraphs—one for the request and reasons, and another for the maintenance issue—would significantly improve the structure and clarity of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'convenience', 'habitual', and 'leakage'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'I decorate and arrange the stuff' (which is informal) and 'I am habitual to it' (which is not a standard collocation). To improve, try to use more precise vocabulary to describe your living situation and the maintenance problem. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and precision required for higher band scores.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
Your writing contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am writing this letter to you for renting' (should be 'to request an extension of my rental'), 'its already 5 months' (missing apostrophe), and 'From very first day' (missing article). Additionally, there are issues with capitalization, such as 'mr smith' and 'i'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent use of articles will help improve your accuracy.
