Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear MR. Singh,

I rented an apartment few months back based on six months agreement in your complex. Now, we are planning to stay for more six months. Therefore, I am writing to request you an extension for an agreement.

Earlier, we were unsure about the duration of our stay in Calgary because of my contract-based job. However, now this company offered me a permanent position, and I would like to continue to gain valuable international workplace experience. It is a greatest opportunity for me to demonstrate my ability and skills to grow in my desire field of job as a IT technician. So, I would like to stay for next six month in the same apartment.

Over the past few months, I have encountered few issues in the apartment such as persist leakage in kitchen through sink tap and some time heating system does work properly. Heating system is most important as winter is coming. Hence, I want you to contact to your regular plumber and technician to check it out.

I hope you understand my concern and you would take some considerable actions to resolve these problem as soon as possible.

Yours faithfully,

Rahul

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly stated the desired extension period, provided a logical explanation regarding your job status, and identified specific maintenance issues. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between the request for an extension and the maintenance issues feels slightly more integrated, though your current structure is perfectly functional for a General Training Task 1 response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'However', and 'Hence' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some of the transitions could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. For instance, the jump from the job update to the maintenance request is a bit abrupt. Using more varied linking phrases would improve the overall cohesion. Nevertheless, the progression of ideas is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different topics.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'permanent position', 'valuable international workplace experience', and 'encountered'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'desire field' (should be 'desired field') and 'persist leakage' (should be 'persistent leakage'). Additionally, 'contact to your regular plumber' is slightly unnatural; 'contact your regular plumber' would be more standard. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and collocations to reach the higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'more six months' (should be 'another six months'), 'some time heating system does work' (should be 'sometimes the heating system does not work'), and 'resolve these problem' (should be 'resolve these problems'). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and pluralization, as these are the primary areas where your accuracy slips.
