IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter for requesting the extension of rental agreement. I have been living since last 5 months in an apartment , and now I want to increase the duration of lease agreement from six months to a year. The reason why I want to continue to live in the same apartment is because I recently, enrolled in another program in my college that is for 6 months. Furthermore, this place is near to my college which is really convenient for me, and do not need to spend extra time to travel to my college. Consequently, it is time saving and I always prefer to walk to my college which helps me to save travel expenses.

However, the only issue that I wanted to discuss with you is the noise coming from the upper floor. Because of the excessive noise I cannot concentrate on my studies. I hope you address the solution for this problem as soon as possible and I might get a chance to rent the same apartment for the next 6 months.

I will be thankful to you for your support.

Yours sincerely,

Harpinder Singh.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state your desire to extend the lease by six months, explain the change in plans due to your new college program, and report the noise issue from the upper floor. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between the noise issue and the request for an extension is more explicitly linked to your overall satisfaction with the apartment.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', and 'However' to link your ideas. However, the paragraphing is slightly underdeveloped; the transition between the request for extension and the complaint about noise could be smoother. Some cohesive devices are used a bit mechanically. Improving the flow between sentences by varying your linking words would enhance the overall coherence of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'extension', 'duration', and 'convenient'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'I am writing this letter for requesting' (should be 'to request') and 'address the solution' (should be 'find a solution' or 'address the issue'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Expanding your use of collocations and more precise academic or formal phrasing would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I have been living since last 5 months' (should be 'for the last 5 months') and 'do not need to spend' (missing subject 'I'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are some awkward phrasings that slightly impede the flow. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading regarding verb tenses and sentence construction.
