IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Samuel,

I am writing in connection with the apartment's agreement coming to an end this month. However, I was wondering that if it is possible to renew the agreement for the next six-months.

let me explain my situation, the reason I want to extent the stay for more than six-months is that I will be graduated in this period of time and possibly join a reputed organization. So, instead I want to focus on the preparation of examination and interviews rather than stressing on finding new accommodations.

Moreover, I am now used to this beautiful apartment; it is not only spacious but also well ventilated and more crucially it is close to all amenities. Unfortunately I noticed there is one issue bothering in winter, the heating system of the apartment is faulty. I find myself struggling with cold during night time, I would really appreciate if this could be repaired at the earliest.

Kindly, let me know if the agreement can be renewed which is genuinely helpful to me and my career.

looking forward to hear from you soon,

thank you for your consideration,

Sara Jafar.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly stated the desired extension period, provided a logical explanation for your change in plans regarding your graduation and job search, and identified the specific issue with the heating system. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, ensuring the reader understands your situation and your request. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between the request and the explanation is smoother, as the current structure feels slightly abrupt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Unfortunately' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be improved. For example, the sentence 'So, instead I want to focus...' feels slightly disconnected from the previous one. Additionally, the closing section uses fragmented sentences ('looking forward to hear from you soon') which affects the overall cohesion. Using more varied linking phrases would enhance the logical progression of your ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'reputed organization', 'accommodations', and 'amenities'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'I will be graduated' (should be 'I will have graduated') and 'issue bothering in winter' (should be 'issue bothering me in winter'). While these errors do not impede communication, they show a need for more precise control over word forms and collocations. Expanding your vocabulary to include more sophisticated expressions for formal requests would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'I was wondering that if it is possible' (the 'that' is redundant), 'extent the stay' (should be 'extend'), and 'struggling with cold' (should be 'the cold'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and capitalization at the start of sentences. While these errors rarely impede the reader's understanding, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct verb tenses will improve your accuracy.
