Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Smith,

I hope you are doing well. I would like to inform you about the apartment rent agreement lease. My husband and I decided to live this location 3 months more instead of leaving the apartment in Sept 2026 . We will stay till December 2026.

Moreover, we changed our plan because my school will finish first week of December 2026. And this location is quite close to my school. So, in winter its really hard for me to up down from Ottawa that's why we extended our rent agreement more 3 months.

Furthermore, I also wanna tell a thing can you please change lights or bulb of washrooms because the light is really dim and sometimes it's start blinking. We are facing this problem last a month ago. I hope you give some attention and fix this.

I hope you do not have any problem if we live an apartment more 3 months. Let me know please what is your decision.

Thank you

Yours Faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt: the duration of the extension, the reason for the change, and the maintenance issue. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal request. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation regarding the school schedule is clear, but the description of the maintenance issue could be more precise. The letter successfully conveys the necessary information to the landlord, fulfilling the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the request. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'So' helps to guide the reader through the text. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be improved for better naturalness. Referencing is generally clear, though some phrasing, such as 'tell a thing', is slightly awkward and impacts the overall cohesion of the paragraph.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their needs clearly. There are some instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'live this location' instead of 'stay in this apartment' and 'up down from Ottawa' which is not a standard collocation. While the student attempts to use specific vocabulary related to the apartment, some phrasing is informal or non-standard. A wider range of more precise, formal vocabulary would elevate the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'we changed our plan because my school will finish first week' (missing article), 'its really hard' (missing apostrophe), and 'We are facing this problem last a month ago' (incorrect tense and preposition usage). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy of the writing.
