IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear sir,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this to request for extension of lease agreement of the apartment.

I previously had the lease for six months and as the last month is approaching, I request you to extend it for another six months.

This place meets all the requirements as the bus stop is nearby and my workplace is easily accessible. Moreover, the stores are also steps away. I have got good friends in the building so to cater my convenience I want to continue renting this apartment.

However, there are a few predicaments. Such as, there is a leakage in bathtub's tap and oven is not working properly. I would be grateful if the necessary arrangements can be made for such.

kindly revert back at your earliest convenience and let me know if any documents are needed for the renewal of lease agreement.

Kind regards

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state the desired extension period, provide a logical reason for the change in plans (convenience and social connections), and identify specific maintenance issues. The tone is appropriate for a formal request to a landlord. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the 'why' behind your plans changing—for example, mentioning a change in work contract or personal circumstances—to make the development of ideas more robust. However, all requirements are met, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the purpose of the letter to the justification, the maintenance issues, and finally the closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate these distinct points. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'However' to link ideas. To improve, ensure that transitions between sentences are smoother. For instance, the transition between the apartment's benefits and the maintenance problems is a bit abrupt. Using more varied cohesive phrases would help the flow of the letter feel more natural and less mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'extension of lease agreement', 'accessible', and 'predicaments'. The word choice is generally accurate and conveys your meaning clearly. There are a few minor issues, such as 'revert back', which is a common redundancy (revert already implies going back). To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations or slightly more sophisticated vocabulary to describe the maintenance issues, such as 'malfunctioning' instead of 'not working properly'. Overall, the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your needs effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some minor grammatical errors, such as 'request for extension' (should be 'a request for an extension') and 'the leakage in bathtub's tap' (should be 'a leak in the bathtub tap'). Additionally, 'Such as, there is...' is a sentence fragment that should be integrated into the previous sentence. While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, focus on article usage and ensuring that all sentences are complete and grammatically sound.
