Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Madam,

I am writing you a letter with regards to increase the rental time period at your residence, which was previously noted for an six months agreement, but I would like to reside their for a longer tenure, around an year.

The company in which I am persuing my internship is now offering me a job. After an year the company will provide me the allowance but for now my prohibition period, I will have to manage it by myself only. Due to this reason I am pleasing you to stretch the agreement, as this place is nearer to my office and also I am used to it due to its surrounding nature.

Also repair the flowing tap water inside the bathroom, as I was unable to sleep at night due that water noise. Ultimately, I request you to allow me to reside at your residence for some more time.

Waiting for your prompt response, so that I can get an idea for my stay over there.

Your's sincerely,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: stating the desired extension, explaining the change in plans, and reporting the maintenance issue. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation regarding the internship and the 'prohibition period' (likely meaning 'probation') is slightly confusing and could have been articulated more clearly to ensure the reader fully understands your situation. Despite this, the purpose of the letter is clear, and all requirements of the task are met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Due to this reason' and 'Also', which help the flow of information. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the connection between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition to the maintenance issue is abrupt. The use of referencing is generally clear, though the phrasing 'due that water noise' is grammatically awkward and hinders the flow. Overall, the message is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to communicate your needs, such as 'reside', 'tenure', and 'prompt response'. However, there are several instances of inaccurate word choice and collocation. For example, 'prohibition period' is used instead of 'probation period', and 'pleasing you to stretch the agreement' is non-standard; 'requesting you to extend the lease' would be more natural. Additionally, 'surrounding nature' is a vague way to describe a location. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they indicate a need for more precise vocabulary usage.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'an six months agreement' (should be 'a six-month agreement'), 'around an year' (should be 'a year'), and 'Your's sincerely' (should be 'Yours sincerely'). The sentence 'I am writing you a letter with regards to increase' is also grammatically incorrect; it should be 'with regard to increasing'. While these errors are frequent, they rarely impede communication. To improve, focus on article usage (a/an) and consistent verb forms after prepositions.
