Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Manjeet Singh,
I am writing this letter to extend the lease of apartment. Before, I agreed with you for six months of stay in your apartment. But, now I want to stay longer for more six months in your flat.
I usually want to go back to my hometown for family function. But, the function gets postponed and it will be organise in the next year rather than this year. This is the main reason I have to change my all the plans and have to extend my lease with you.
One main problem in your flat is that its microwave is not working properly. It do not warm the food properly. Additionally, I have to suffer lot of problems with frozen foods to heat them up. Can you please replace it. Rest every things work very well.
Hope you will understand my situation. Looking for a positive feedback.
Yours, faithfully,
Inderveer Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: the duration of the extension, the reason for the change, and the maintenance issue. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the explanation regarding the family function is a bit repetitive, and the description of the microwave issue could be more precise. To reach a higher band, ensure that the purpose of the letter is stated clearly in the opening and that each point is expanded with slightly more detail to demonstrate a more sophisticated command of the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. The progression of ideas is generally clear, moving from the request to the reason and then to the maintenance issue. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited (e.g., 'But', 'Additionally'). The transition between sentences could be smoother to improve the flow of the text. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the overall structure would benefit from a wider variety of linking words to connect ideas more naturally rather than relying on simple conjunctions.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are some awkward phrasings, such as 'change my all the plans' and 'suffer lot of problems'. While the meaning is always clear, the range of vocabulary is limited to common, everyday words. To improve, you should aim to incorporate more specific collocations and formal expressions suitable for a business-like request. For example, instead of 'extend the lease of apartment', using 'request an extension of my tenancy agreement' would demonstrate a higher level of lexical control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The letter contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'it will be organise' (should be 'organized'), 'It do not warm' (should be 'It does not warm'), and 'Rest every things work' (should be 'Everything else works'). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding the message. To achieve a higher band, you need to focus on subject-verb agreement and verb tense consistency, as well as attempting more complex sentence structures with greater accuracy.
