IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Sharma,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to ask for my rent agreement extension, which previously I signed for six month only.

As of now, I wish to stay for six more months, since my own house construction needs some more time to finish.

Also, I was expecting it to be finished before my contract expires with you, but due to financial constraints that we have for losing my job, we were not able to complete that assignment in time.

However, I want to draw your attention towards a problem that I am facing in this apartment. When there is heavy rain outside, there is a leakage near the front door, which allows seeping some water inside the house near the gate. Please get fixed as soon as possible at your convenience.

I look forward to your reply and hope for positive response.

Warm Regards,

Mamta

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state the desired extension period, provide a logical reason for the change in plans, and describe the maintenance issue regarding the water leakage. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. To improve, you could expand slightly on the impact of the leakage to ensure the urgency is conveyed more effectively. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific point from the prompt, which helps the reader follow your message easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However' and 'Also' to link your thoughts. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words further and ensure that the transition between the request for extension and the maintenance issue feels more natural. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, such as 'financial constraints' and 'agreement extension'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'for losing my job' instead of 'due to losing my job' or 'get fixed' instead of 'have it fixed'. While these errors do not impede communication, using more precise collocations would enhance the professional tone of your writing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more specific terms related to property management would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'which previously I signed for six month only' (should be 'six months') and 'allows seeping some water' (should be 'allows some water to seep'). Additionally, 'Please get fixed' is missing an object. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct usage of infinitive versus gerund forms after certain verbs.
