Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mrs. Anderson,
I hope you're well. I am writing this to requesting you to extend a lease of six-month due to changes we expect in our family as well as safety and convenience we feel at this apartment. Furthermore, I would like to discuss few problems which you may address with possible solutions.
As we already had a signed contract of six-month, I would like to convert into a full year lease from the following month. The reasons behind to propose these changes are simply about family and comfort that we get here. Firstly, we are expecting a baby girl next month so it wouldn't be possible to change apartment single handedly. Moreover, the apartment is situated at the heart of the city and very convenient in terms of accessibility of things nearby as well as interior and maintenance services we get from you.
However, despite of everything being perfect in this apartment, we still face water leakage issues from roof area in a master bedroom which I would request you to fix as soon as possible. Along with that, I would also suggest to replace a dishwasher machine as it will be out of order in next two months due to warranty expiry.
I hope you will address these requests with carefully and looking forward to hearing from you. Have a great day!
Yours sincerely,
Viral Siddhapura

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly stated the desired extension period, provided a logical reason for the change (the upcoming birth of your child), and identified specific maintenance issues (water leakage and the dishwasher). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have met all the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'As we already had', 'Firstly', and 'Moreover' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally good, some transitions are slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the request, the reasons, and the maintenance issues. The progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'situated at the heart of the city' and 'accessibility of things' are effective. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'requesting you to extend a lease of six-month' (should be 'a six-month lease') and 'address these requests with carefully' (should be 'carefully address these requests'). Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is adequate for the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some recurring grammatical errors, such as 'despite of' (should be 'despite' or 'in spite of'), 'a dishwasher machine' (redundant), and 'it will be out of order' (incorrect tense usage for a prediction). Additionally, there are minor errors with articles and prepositions, such as 'from roof area'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication or cause confusion for the reader.
