Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter to inform you that i want to stay for more than six months in your renting apartment.

Five months ago, we had an original agreement that i will live for six months but now i wish to stay for a year in the same apartment. Moreover, all kinds of amenities are available near this place.

Actually, i enrolled for September intake in Algoma University for my higher studies but, owing to my health issues i defer my studied from September to January 2027. That is why i need to stay for more time there.

Apart from it, there are several problems in the house that you need to fix such as, a window of my room is totally broken and the flies or insects are coming to my room that may cause severe diseases.

Hope to hearing from you soon.

Yours Sincerely,

Ravjot Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You successfully stated how long you wish to extend your stay, mentioning a desire to stay for a year. You explained the change in your plans by stating that you enrolled for the September intake at Algoma University but had to defer your studies to January 2027 due to health issues. Finally, you informed the owner about a problem in the apartment, specifically mentioning a broken window and the entry of insects. All parts of the prompt are addressed clearly, though the development of some ideas is slightly brief. Overall, the task is fulfilled adequately, earning a band score of 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear purpose established in the opening sentence. Paragraphing is used to separate different aspects of the letter, such as the change of plans and the house problem. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or awkwardly deployed, as seen in transitions like 'Apart from it'. Additionally, pronoun referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the transition from discussing university plans back to living arrangements ('That is why i need to stay for more time there'). The opening and closing salutations are included, but logical progression between sentences could be smoother. This corresponds to a band score of 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating everyday needs and situations. You attempt some less common items such as 'amenities', 'defer', and 'severe diseases', though there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'renting apartment' instead of 'rented apartment' or 'rental apartment', and 'defer my studied' instead of 'defer my studies'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but capitalization errors with the first-person pronoun 'i' occur throughout. These lexical limitations and slips place your performance at a band score of 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I am writing this letter to inform you that i want to stay...' and '...owing to my health issues i defer my studied from September to January 2027.' There are several grammatical errors and punctuation lapses, including incorrect capitalization of 'i', tense inconsistency ('defer' instead of 'deferred'), and a missing comma before conjunctions. Furthermore, the final sentence contains an error with gerund usage ('Hope to hearing from you soon' instead of 'Hoping to hear from you soon' or 'I hope to hear from you soon'). Despite these errors, communication is not impeded, supporting a band score of 5.5.
