IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.
Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter
- say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
- explain why your plans have changed
- tell the owner about a problem in the apartment
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Alok,
I hope this letter find you in good health. I am a tennant living in one of your apartment located in Ashok Nagar. As we orginally agreed to keep my stay in your apartment for six months, I want to extend it for next one year since I find this place in vicinity to my workplace. Since the project that was assigned to me has now extended for one more year, my company has asked me to be present for this assignment till its implementation and closure.
As I find this place near to the office, my working schedule is comfortable as I can visit my office anytime when my team requires my presence and assitance.
One issue that I want to highlight is to have the current power system fixed as when there is no power sometimes in day and night and it gets difficult to work and spend my time there. I would suggest for a power back up solution installed here through an inverter system.
Kindly let me know if you can make this arrangement and are okay to extend my stay here. Based on your confirmation we can proceed with the legal formalities.
Many Thanks.
Kind Regards,
Pratyush

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. First, the letter clearly states the desired extension period: 'to extend it for next one year'. Second, it explains the change in plans by mentioning that the project assigned at work has been extended, requiring the tenant's presence. Third, it successfully highlights a maintenance issue regarding the power system and proposes a practical solution. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter to a landlord, and the purpose of the communication is achieved effectively throughout the response, matching the Band 7 requirements well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter maintains a clear logical progression throughout, with each paragraph serving a distinct function corresponding to the prompt requirements. The greeting, opening pleasantry, body paragraphs covering the extension, reasons, and apartment issue, and the concluding call to action are all logically sequenced. Cohesive devices such as 'Since', 'One issue that I want to highlight', and 'Based on your confirmation' are used appropriately to guide the reader. Paragraphing is handled sufficiently, although the second single-sentence paragraph could have been integrated into the preceding paragraph for better flow. Overall, cohesion is generally clear and effective.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suitable for a general correspondence task. Terms such as 'vicinity', 'implementation and closure', 'working schedule', and 'legal formalities' display a sufficient lexical resource. There are a few noticeable vocabulary and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'tennant' (instead of tenant), 'orginally' (originally), and 'assitance' (assistance). However, these errors do not impede communication, and the writer attempts less common lexical items with general success, aligning comfortably with a Band 6.5 or solid Band 6 performance.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, utilising subordinate clauses effectively ('Since the project that was assigned to me has now extended...'). Grammatical control is reasonably good, though there are a few minor errors, such as 'I hope this letter find you' (should be 'finds') and 'vicinity to my workplace' (typically 'in the vicinity of'). Punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentences are structured well enough that meaning is never obscured. The majority of simpler sentences are error-free, supporting a Band 6.5 rating.
