Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter regarding my rental agreement for six months which is due to next month. I would like to ask you if it is possible to extend my rental agreement.

I would like to stay here more next six months. The plan has changed because I have recently offered a full time job position where I was working as a part time worker. So, changing the accomodation would be inconvienent and expensive. Moreover, this place is very nearby to bus stop and my work which is very convienent for me to travel at work.

However, I would like to let you know there are some problems in my aparment which need some repair. The heating system is not working properly which caused problem to warm then room, especially at night time. Moreover, dryer is also not working properly from two weeks. I would really appreciate you if you could arrange for someone to inspect and repair it as soon as possible.

I have really enjoyed to living in this apartment and wish to continue stay here more six months. Please let me know if it would be possible. I really look forward to your response.

Kind regards,

Monu

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The student successfully covers all bullet points required in the task. First, the writer clearly states the desired duration for the extension, writing 'I would like to stay here more next six months'. Second, the change in plans is explained adequately by mentioning a recent promotion from part-time to full-time work and the resulting convenience. Finally, the letter addresses a maintenance issue by detailing problems with the heating system and the dryer. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter to a landlord. All parts of the prompt are addressed, demonstrating clear understanding and adequate development of ideas, placing this performance securely at Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear logical organization with appropriate paragraphing. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, beginning with the purpose of the letter, moving to the change in plans and reasons, then introducing the apartment maintenance issues, and finishing with a polite closing. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'However', 'Moreover', and 'So', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Referencing throughout the letter is generally clear, allowing the reader to follow the train of thought without confusion. This meets the criteria for Band 7.0 due to clear logical organization and progression throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating personal needs and apartment maintenance issues. There are several spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'due to next month' instead of 'due next month', 'accomodation' (accommodation), 'inconvienent' (inconvenient), 'convienent' (convenient), 'aparment' (apartment), and 'to living' instead of 'living'. Despite these errors, communication is never impeded, and the writer attempts some less common lexical items like 'inspect and repair' and 'rental agreement'. This performance aligns well with the Band 6.0 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional or relative clauses such as 'which is due to next month' and 'if it is possible to extend'. There are noticeable grammatical errors throughout the text, including prepositional and article inaccuracies like 'nearby to bus stop and my work', 'warm then room', and 'from two weeks' (instead of 'for two weeks'). However, the meaning remains clear, and these errors do not impede communication. The control over grammar is typical of a solid Band 6.0 performance, featuring a mix of error-free sentences alongside frequent minor slips.
