IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.
Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter
- say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
- explain why your plans have changed
- tell the owner about a problem in the apartment
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr Kang,
I am writing this letter to make a request to you about an extension on lease agreement.
As you know, we previously made an agreement for six months. Now I want an extension of the lease. If possible, could you please extend it to 1 year?
Actually, this location is quite convenient for me to go to college and work.
Also, the public transport service is excellent in our locality. Moreover, all the stores, like shopping stores, medical stores, and some of the walk-in clinics, are just within walking distance. Apart from this, my company recently, offered me a new position with a one-year contract, so from this location to going over there is easy for me.
Now, I want to make one more request about the apartment's water drainage system. Owing to this, I have faced many issues in my kitchen while doing the dishes, and sometimes the dryer in the laundry room is not working properly because of that clothes remain wet.
Looking forward to possible solutions.
Yours sincerely,
Gurleen Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all bullet points specified in the prompt. Gurleen clearly states how long she wants to rent the apartment for by writing, 'could you please extend it to 1 year?'. The explanation for the changed plans is also well-developed, mentioning both the convenient location near college and work, as well as a new one-year contract offered by her company. Finally, she clearly informs the owner about a problem in the apartment, specifically detailing issues with the kitchen's water drainage system and the laundry room dryer. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. All parts of the task are fully addressed, supporting a solid Band 7.0 performance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the opening statement of purpose to the reasons for extending the lease, and finally to the maintenance issue in the apartment. Gurleen uses cohesive devices appropriately, such as 'Actually', 'Also', 'Moreover', and 'Apart from this', although some transitions like 'Owing to this' are slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, contributing to an overall coherent structure that is easy for the reader to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task with some flexibility and precision. Phrases such as 'lease agreement', 'public transport service', and 'walk-in clinics' show appropriate collocation and topic-specific language. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, though some phrasing feels slightly unnatural or repetitive, such as 'shopping stores, medical stores'. Minor awkwardness appears in sentences like 'from this location to going over there is easy for me', but overall, the lexical resource is adequate to convey precise meaning without impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
Gurleen uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms effectively. Structures such as 'If possible, could you please extend it to 1 year?' and 'Owing to this, I have faced many issues in my kitchen while doing the dishes' demonstrate good control over grammar and punctuation. There are a few minor errors, such as 'from this location to going over there is easy for me', which is slightly clumsy, and a minor comma splice or punctuation slip. However, the majority of sentences are error-free, and these minor issues do not impede communication at all.
