Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Dean,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to express my interest in extending the rental agreement.

To begin with, as you know right now I am doing an internship, which was orginally supposed to last only for six months. But, as I got hired by the same company so because of that I have to continue staying here. I would really appreciate it if you would agree to extent our rental agreement and made it an yearly contract.

However, at the same time there are several issues with the apartment such as heating, ventilation and loud noises from the neighbours apartment which are effecting my work and personal life. So, can you please look into those matter and do something about those so that I can work in peace and without any disturbace.

Please le me know what you think about my suggestion. I will wait for your response.

Yours Sincerely,

Sam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all bullet points outlined in the prompt. First, you clearly state how long you want to rent the apartment for by requesting an yearly contract. Second, you explain why your plans have changed by mentioning that your internship was extended into a permanent job offer at the same company. Finally, you mention specific problems in the apartment, namely heating, ventilation, and loud noises from neighbours. All parts of the task are addressed appropriately with relevant ideas, meeting the requirements of a Band 6.5 to 7.0 level. However, the explanation regarding your plans changing is slightly repetitive, which keeps it from reaching higher bands. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and completely fulfilled.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter maintains a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You begin with an appropriate salutation and opening statement, followed by distinct paragraphs for your request, reasons for changing plans, and the apartment problems. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'However', and 'So' are used to connect ideas, although some transitions like 'so because of that' are a bit colloquial and mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate different topics, making the letter easy to follow. Referencing is generally clear, resulting in a solid performance for cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task. You successfully attempt less common vocabulary such as 'extending the rental agreement', 'internship', and 'ventilation'. However, there are some word choice and collocation errors, such as 'extent' instead of 'extend', 'an yearly contract' instead of 'a yearly contract', and 'affecting' instead of 'affecting' (though spelled correctly, the phrasing in the surrounding context has awkward flow). There are also minor spelling and typographical errors like 'orginally' instead of 'originally' and 'disturbace' instead of 'disturbance'. These lexical slips do not impede communication, placing your vocabulary in the Band 6.0 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I am writing this letter to express my interest in...' and 'I would really appreciate it if you would agree to extend...'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures throughout the text. For example, 'as you know right now I am doing an internship' lacks proper punctuation, and 'so because of that I have to continue staying here' is a run-on with redundant conjunctions. Additionally, 'can you please look into those matter' has a pluralisation error ('those matter' instead of 'those matters'). Despite these errors, meaning is never obscured, matching the descriptors for Band 6.0.
