IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear ..........

I hope you are doing well. The reason to write this letter is to request to extend my tenancy contract for more 6 months.

As I said that my family was supposed to come at the end of the next month I wanted a big place so they can live comfertably in a spacious apartment. However, due to some business needs my father will not be able to visit Canada this year. So, I do not require a big apartment for atleast 6 next months and this is the reason I want to continue my lease.

I also want to inform you that the air-condition is humming too loud which is affecting my sleep in night and I guess this is the reason it is not cooling the room properly so when you get chance please arrange a repairs so it does not affect my sleep schedule.

It would be such a big help on me if you extend my contract. So, I do not need to look for somewhere else. I wait for your positive response.

Sincerely,

Yahya patel.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The candidate successfully covers all parts of the prompt. First, you state how long you wish to extend the tenancy for, mentioning 'more 6 months'. Second, you explain why your plans have changed regarding your father's visit to Canada due to business needs. Finally, you inform the owner about a problem with the air-conditioner humming loudly and not cooling properly. All three bullet points are clearly addressed and appropriately extended, demonstrating a clear purpose and tone suitable for a general task 1 letter. The tone is polite and the message is fully communicated throughout, meeting the requirements of Band 6.5 to Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall arrangement and follows a logical structure with standard greeting and sign-off conventions. Paragraphing is used adequately to separate distinct ideas, such as the lease extension, the reasons for changing plans, and the maintenance issue. However, some cohesive devices and transitions feel slightly repetitive or mechanical, such as 'The reason to write this letter is' and 'and this is the reason'. Referencing is generally clear, but better control of logical connectors would elevate the organisation of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with appropriate functional phrases like 'tenancy contract', 'spacious apartment', and 'positive response'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'comfertably' instead of 'comfortably', 'atleast' instead of 'at least', and 'air-condition' instead of 'air conditioner'. Additionally, phrasing such as 'The reason to write this letter is to request to extend' is somewhat unnatural. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect the limitations characteristic of Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response includes a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable command of English grammar. For instance, the sentence 'However, due to some business needs my father will not be able to visit Canada this year' shows good control of a subordinate clause. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward structures, such as 'request to extend my tenancy contract for more 6 months' (missing 'an additional') and 'arrange a repairs' (incorrect article and noun form). Punctuation is also occasionally weak, but these errors rarely impede overall comprehension.
