Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sir
I am writing to inform you that I will stay in this apartment for a long time.
I will give rent 8months more because we will stay here more 8months. Actually, my plan was changed because I get new job oppurtunity here and I get a 8months contract in this job. This house is very close to my new job so that's why I decide me and my whole family stay here long time. Second reason is that my childrens school is also close to this apartment. They do not need to use public transport for going school.
No doubt, this apartment is on good location and all facilities are good but I faced one problem that is less heating in the house. My whole family feel cold please send any technician at my home to solve this issue.
I look forward to hearing from you soon when heating system will be correct. Thank you for your time.
Yours's faithfully,
Navjot kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The candidate addresses all bullet points required by the prompt. First, she clearly states the desired extension by mentioning that she wants to stay for eight more months. Second, she explains why her plans have changed by citing a new job opportunity and the convenience of the apartment's location relative to her children's school. Third, she reports a specific maintenance problem regarding inadequate heating in the house. However, the tone is somewhat informal and repetitive in places (e.g., repeating '8months'), and the explanation could be slightly more polished. Nevertheless, all three core requirements of the task are fulfilled effectively, earning a solid band score for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organised into logical paragraphs that separate the greeting, the main purpose, the reasons for changing plans, the apartment issue, and the sign-off. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Actually', 'Second reason is that', and 'No doubt', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, but paragraphing could be structured more fluidly, and the lack of proper punctuation in places (such as run-on sentences) slightly disrupts the flow of ideas. Overall, the organisation is coherent enough to guide the reader smoothly through the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The candidate demonstrates an adequate vocabulary for a general correspondence task, using words and phrases like 'opportunity', 'public transport', and 'technician'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, such as 'give rent' instead of 'pay rent', 'oppurtunity' (spelling error), and 'good location' rather than 'a good location'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with limited success. While these inaccuracies do not impede communication, they reflect a restricted lexical range that prevents the score from reaching a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writing shows a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I am writing to inform you that...' and 'this apartment is on good location and all facilities are good but I faced one problem...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including missing articles ('get new job oppurtunity', 'on good location', 'at my home'), tense inconsistencies ('my plan was changed because I get new job'), and incorrect sign-off formatting ('Yours's faithfully'). Punctuation is also weak in places, such as missing commas and periods. These errors occasionally cause the reader hesitation, aligning with band 5.0.
