Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to inform you that I am planning to extend my agreement for the apartment I have rented. Originally, it was for only six months. Now, I wish to extend it to two years.
Initially, I moved to this city for a six-month internship. As it is coming to an end, my company has offerend me a role in the management sector for eighteen months. After consulting with my parents, I have decided to accept this offer, as this will help me gain relevent experience in my field. As my current apartment is close to the company, it will be convenient for me to travel to the office everyday.
However, I would like to talk about an ongoing problem in my apartment. The stove in the kitchen is not working properly for the past week, and I have been eating outside food. This has started affecting my health. I request to get that repaired so that I can cook at home as well.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Tayyaba

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the task prompt. You clearly state the new duration of your rental period, explaining that you wish to extend it to two years. Your reasons for the change in plans are well-articulated, mentioning your internship ending and your company offering you a management role. Additionally, you clearly inform the owner about the ongoing maintenance problem with the kitchen stove not working properly for the past week. All parts of the task are addressed appropriately with relevant ideas, presenting a clear purpose and position throughout the letter. The tone is polite and appropriate for a semi-formal letter to a landlord.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Ideas are logically sequenced, beginning with the purpose of the letter, followed by the background and reasons for the plan change, the maintenance issue, and finally a polite closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the message. Cohesive devices such as 'Originally', 'Now', 'Initially', 'As', and 'However' are used effectively to connect ideas and maintain smooth transitions between sentences and paragraphs, ensuring the reader can follow your narrative without confusion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision appropriate for a general task. You use less common lexical items with some awareness of style and collocation, such as 'extend my agreement', 'management sector', and 'ongoing problem'. There are a couple of minor lexical slips, such as spelling 'offerend' instead of 'offered' and using 'relevent' instead of 'relevant'. However, these vocabulary and spelling errors are occasional and do not impede communication, allowing the reader to fully understand your message with ease.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The letter features a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over your grammatical structures. You successfully incorporate dependent clauses and transitional phrases, such as 'As it is coming to an end, my company has offered me a role...' and 'After consulting with my parents, I have decided to accept this offer...'. While there are a few minor mechanical errors, such as the spelling typo ('offerend'), your grammar and punctuation are generally well-managed. The majority of sentences are clear and correct, and the minor errors do not cause any difficulty for the reader or impede communication.
