Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Alejandro,
I am writing this letter regarding the extension of rent for the apartment and want to stay six month more.
My work visa will be expiring on April 2027 and I am planning to more back to my country but recently I got an opportunity from my workplace and they are extending my work visa for 6 months more since I have been their loyal employee for long time and performed very well during last quater. The work dynamics and plans have changed and I need the place to stay.
I would appreciate if you can extend my rent agreement for next six months, since it is feasible for me to commute to my workplace. Also everything is nearby, gym, groceries and supermaket. However, recently I am facing issue with hot water shower. Since winter is approaching, it would be difficult for me in the morning.
If you don't mind, can you please send plumber to fix this as soon as possible.
I am awaiting for your positive response.
Kind regards,
Saurabh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully covers all the bullet points outlined in the prompt. You clearly stated how much longer you wish to rent the apartment ('six month more'), explained the change in your plans regarding your work visa extension and workplace opportunity, and informed the owner about a problem with the hot water shower. The tone of the letter is generally appropriate for communicating with a landlord, and the purpose of the communication is transparent throughout. However, some ideas lack full development or precision, such as the sudden transition into the apartment problem, which places this response comfortably at the Band 6 level. All requirements of the prompt are addressed, fulfilling the core communicative goals effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning and ending, such as the standard greeting and sign-off ('Dear Alejandro' and 'Kind regards, Saurabh'). Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct ideas, moving from the visa situation to the rental request and the maintenance issue. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, the transition into the amenities ('Also everything is nearby...') feels abrupt, and cohesive devices are occasionally missing or repetitive. Furthermore, minor structural issues in sentence ordering slightly disrupt the logical flow. Nevertheless, the progression of ideas is clear enough for the reader to follow the letter without confusion, supporting a solid Band 6 score.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'extension', 'opportunity', 'loyal employee', and 'feasible'. There are, however, several word-choice and collocation errors, such as writing 'more back' instead of 'move back', 'quater' instead of 'quarter', and 'hot water shower' instead of 'hot water supply' or 'shower water heater'. Spelling slips like 'supermaket' also occur. While these errors do not impede communication, they reflect a limited and developing lexical range. To push into higher bands, you would need to incorporate a wider variety of less common lexical items with greater precision and awareness of natural collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating your ability to link clauses using conjunctions like 'since' and 'and'. There are, however, noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout the text. Examples include 'want to stay six month more' (missing subject and pluralisation error), 'My work visa will be expiring' (tense choice), and 'I am awaiting for your positive response' (incorrect preposition usage with 'awaiting'). Punctuation is also occasionally weak, such as missing commas in lists ('gym, groceries and supermaket'). These errors persist but rarely impede overall understanding, fitting the descriptor for Band 6 where a mix of structures is used alongside frequent minor errors.
