Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Smith,

I am writing regading our agreement for the duration of renting the apartment . As you know , initially I rented the apartment for a period of six months but now , I wish to stay longer for another year.

This is because my company has extended my work contract from six months to an year in the same town. The location of your apartment suits me the best when it comes to be at my office on time. It Is also close to the main city centre and hardly takes longer to handpick groceries for my household. The traffic in this residential area is also very limied with no noise pollution. So keeping all these good things in my mind, I would like to prolong my contract as your tenant for the next year.

However , I have been facing issues with the kitchen basin and its drainage for the last week . It gets stuck on and off and needs to be fixed by a professionl plumber. I would like you to send someone from the society office to get it done.

I would be looking forward to your response. Thank you !

Regards,

Axb

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You successfully cover all three bullet points required by the task prompt. You clearly state the duration you wish to extend your stay for ('another year'), explain the change in plans due to your company extending your work contract, and inform the owner about the issue with the kitchen basin and drainage. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter to a landlord, and the purpose of the communication is obvious from the opening sentence. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently detailed, fulfilling all the requirements of a general training task 1 response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter is logically organised and easy to follow. Paragraphs are used appropriately to separate different topics, such as the lease extension, the reasons for changing plans, and the maintenance issue with the sink. You use suitable cohesive devices like 'This is because', 'It Is also close', and 'However' to guide the reader through your arguments. While some spacing and punctuation around commas are slightly mechanical or erratic (e.g., spaces before commas), the overall logical progression and paragraphing support clear communication throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate and functional range of vocabulary to complete the task. You successfully use common workplace and housing terms such as 'work contract', 'residential area', 'noise pollution', and 'drainage'. There are some minor lexical slips or awkward choices, such as 'handpick groceries' instead of 'buy groceries', but these do not impede understanding. To reach higher bands, you could incorporate more precise, less common collocations and idiomatic expressions related to housing and rental agreements.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a satisfactory mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and subordinate clauses ('As you know, initially I rented... but now...'). There are some minor grammatical and punctuation errors, including spelling slips like 'regading' instead of 'regarding', 'an year' instead of 'a year', 'professionl' instead of 'professional', and spacing errors around punctuation marks. However, the majority of your simple sentences are error-free, and these minor slips do not impede overall communication, placing you comfortably at a band 6.
