Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Sharma,

I am requesting to extend my lease for upto one year as I am planning to continue my job at the same location for little longer.

In regards to renting an apartment, I would like to stay here for another 6 months. As the loction is very convenient for my job as well as all amenities are very closer. In addition, this apartment is in a quiet location which reduces the noise from main highway. I am also find it fascinating living here because the management arranges meetings with residents every month to have social acitivities together.

Initially, I just wanted to move in this company for better opportunities and self-growth. However, this comapny offered me the assistant manager post recently. This can really benefit me in perspective of the experience, value, and future dvelopments. Thus, I would like to stick with this company little longer.

Although this unit has rennovated recently and all equipments are new, water clog is the consistent in the bathroom sink. I tried to fix on my own quite a few times, but the problem remainspersistent. so, I would appreciate if you could change/fix the pipe which runs underneath.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

yours sincerely,

Bindi Soni

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt in a generally effective manner. You clearly state the intended extension duration ('upto one year' in the first paragraph, though later clarified as another 6 months), explain why your plans changed due to your job promotion to assistant manager, and describe the maintenance problem regarding the consistent water clogging in the bathroom sink. The tone is appropriately semi-formal for a landlord-tenant communication. However, there is a minor contradiction in the opening paragraph where you mention wanting to extend 'for upto one year' before immediately stating 'I would like to stay here for another 6 months.' Despite this slight inconsistency, all core requirements are successfully addressed, and the purpose of the letter remains clear throughout. This performance satisfies the criteria for Band 6.5, leaning towards Band 7.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a clear overall progression and logical arrangement. Ideas are generally grouped into relevant paragraphs: the introduction and lease extension proposal, the reasons for staying, the change in employment circumstances, and the maintenance issue. Cohesive devices are used throughout, such as 'In addition,' 'Initially,' and 'Although,' though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or awkward, as seen in 'In regards to renting an apartment, I would like to stay here for another 6 months.' Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct topics, and referencing is mostly clear. While cohesion works adequately to guide the reader through the message, occasional awkward links prevent it from reaching a higher band. Overall, this demonstrates the characteristics of a Band 6.5 or 7.0 structure.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a general correspondence task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'convenient,' 'amenities,' 'fascinating,' 'opportunities,' and 'consistent.' There are, however, several lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'little longer' instead of 'a little longer,' 'loction' (spelling), 'in perspective of' instead of 'from the perspective of,' and 'rennovated' (spelling). You also confuse 'move in this company' with joining a company. While these errors are noticeable and detract from precision, they do not impede communication as the meaning remains clear to the reader. This performance aligns well with a Band 6.0 lexical profile, where an adequate range is displayed despite some recurring inaccuracies.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses using words like 'as,' 'although,' and 'since.' There are several grammatical errors scattered throughout the response, including articles and prepositions ('for little longer,' 'all amenities are very closer,' 'I am also find it fascinating,' 'water clog is the consistent'). Furthermore, sentence fragmentation occurs in the fourth paragraph: 'so, I would appreciate if you could change/fix the pipe which runs underneath.' Despite these errors, the majority of your sentences remain understandable, and communication is rarely impeded. Because the grammatical control shows a mix of accurate complex forms alongside frequent minor slips, this performance fits comfortably into the Band 6.0 category.
