Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Patel,
I am writing to ask whether it would be possible to extend my current rental agreement for your apartment, which is due to end next month.
I would like to stay in the apartment for another six moths, as I have recently decided to continue living this area for my study. Originally, I planned to move to another city after my graduation but I want purse my masters in this city. So would prefer to remain in my current accommodation.
I have been very comfortable in the apartment and have enjoyed living here. However, I would like to bring a problem in your attention. The water heater in the bathroom has recently stopped working properly, and water sometime become cold while I am using it. It would be grateful if you arrange for someone to repair it.
Please let me know about your decision related to extend the rental agreement and any other condition related to this topic.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Krupa Maisuria

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all the bullet points outlined in the task instructions. You clearly stated how long you wish to extend the rental agreement ('for another six moths'), explained why your plans changed due to your decision to pursue a Master's degree in the city, and informed the owner about the water heater problem in the bathroom. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter to a landlord. Although there are a few minor typos like 'moths' instead of 'months', all parts of the prompt are fully addressed with relevant and well-developed ideas, earning a solid band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your letter is logically organised into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose from introducing the request to explaining the change of plans, mentioning the maintenance issue, and closing politely. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'However', 'Originally', and 'So', to connect ideas smoothly. While paragraphing and referencing are clear, referencing could occasionally be smoother, and some cohesive devices are simple. Overall progression is clear throughout the text, matching the expectations for a band 7.0 in this criterion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrated a sufficient vocabulary range to convey your message with adequate flexibility and precision. Phrases such as 'extend my current rental agreement', 'pursue my masters', and 'current accommodation' show a good grasp of semi-formal vocabulary relevant to renting an apartment. However, there are a few minor lexical errors and typos, such as spelling 'moths' instead of 'months' and the slightly awkward phrasing 'bring a problem in your attention' instead of 'bring a problem to your attention'. Despite these occasional errors, communication is never impeded, easily securing a band 6.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses ('apartment, which is due to end next month') and conditional-like constructions. There is a good degree of control over grammar and punctuation overall. However, a few grammatical and mechanical errors persist, such as 'water sometime become' (missing plural/third-person 's' and subject-verb agreement) and 'It would be grateful if you arrange' (should be 'It would be appreciated if...'). Despite these occasional slips, the majority of sentences are clear and error-free, warranting a band 6.5.
