Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.
Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter
- say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
- explain why your plans have changed
- tell the owner about a problem in the apartment
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr.Shah,
I am writing to enquire about the lease extension for 21C deerfield drive, which I have agreed and signed for six months. I am looking forward to stay at this location for a year due to job promotion in the same company.
My planning and team's hard work was extremely dedicated for the assignment. As a result, every task has been completed before the due date. Since they launched the plan and is on running mode, Manager offered me for the operation management for next six months to ensure smooth transition and ongoing SOP procedures thoughout. Consequently, I will have to find an accomodation for half year.
If possible, I would prefer to live in the same house, due to its prime location. However, there is an issue of water leackage from the pipes in the kitchen and bathroom. Additionally, Front door lock is broken. I will appreciate if you could arrange the maintenance service soon.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Dimpal.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The student has successfully covered all parts of the task prompt. You clearly stated how long you wish to rent the apartment for by mentioning 'stay at this location for a year' and 'find an accomodation for half year'. The reason for the change in plans is well explained through your job promotion and new operational management responsibilities. Furthermore, you effectively informed the owner about a problem in the apartment, specifically citing the 'water leackage from the pipes' and the broken front door lock. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter to a landlord. All bullet points are fully addressed with relevant supporting details, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0 performance.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter is logically organised with a clear overarching progression. Ideas flow reasonably well from the initial enquiry about the lease extension to the reasons behind the plan change, followed by the maintenance issues. You make effective use of cohesive devices such as 'Consequently', 'Additionally', and 'If possible'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct topics, such as work developments in the second paragraph and apartment maintenance in the third. However, referencing and cohesive links are occasionally a bit mechanical, particularly in the second paragraph where sentences like 'Since they launched the plan and is on running mode' disrupt the natural flow slightly. Overall, the organisation is clear and easy to follow, supporting a solid Band 6.5.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully communicating the intended message. You attempt some less common lexical items such as 'job promotion', 'prime location', and 'maintenance service'. However, there are notable word choice and spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'accomodation' (accommodation), 'leackage' (leakage), and the awkward phrasing 'is on running mode'. Additionally, phrases like 'I will appreciate if' omit the necessary modal 'would'. While these errors do not impede communication, they reflect a Band 6 level where vocabulary control shows some recurring inaccuracies.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional clauses ('If possible, I would prefer...') and subordinate clauses ('Since they launched the plan...'). However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward constructions, such as 'I am looking forward to stay' (should be 'staying'), 'Manager offered me for the operation management' (unnecessary preposition and article misuse), and 'thoughout' (throughout). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but subject-verb agreement and prepositional use need refinement. Because errors occur regularly without completely impeding communication, this performance aligns well with the Band 6 descriptor.
