IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Owner,

My name is Abhay and I am your tenant staying on 3 floor and the apartment number is 309. I am writing to extend my renting agreement as earlier it was decided for six months.

I would like to add extra three months to an agreement. Therefore, my total months for the renting a condo would be nine months. It would be greatly appreciated if you approve my extension and provide a new contract for that period.

The sudden change in my plans is due to the company workload. Our organization recently got a huge order to build trains and for that reason i have to stay in the same site to manage the process.

I would also like you to inform that my apartment's balcony light is not working. I already change the buld but it seems like there is a problem in internal wiring. Can you please provide me a help with that as i like to have a dinner in my balcony.

Hope you extend my period of stay and i am looking forward to your response.

Your faithfully,

AP

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response fully satisfies all bullet points outlined in the prompt. The student clearly states the desired extension period by writing, 'I would like to add extra three months to an agreement.' Furthermore, the explanation for the change in plans is clearly articulated, citing company workload and a specific project involving trains: 'Our organization recently got a huge order to build trains and for that reason i have to stay in the same site.' Finally, the letter successfully introduces a maintenance issue regarding the balcony light, noting both the symptom and a suspected electrical wiring fault. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal request to a landlord. Because all requirements of the task are adequately covered and appropriately supported with relevant details, the response easily meets the criteria for Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a clear, logical progression throughout. It opens with an appropriate salutation and self-introduction, moves sequentially through the purpose of writing, explains the reason for the plan changes, introduces the maintenance issue, and concludes with a polite sign-off. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct ideas, such as grouping the duration extension in the second paragraph and the workload explanation in the third. Cohesive devices are handled reasonably well with connectors like 'Therefore' and 'I would also like to inform that', though transitions could occasionally be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, and the structure supports overall readability well, aligning comfortably with a Band 6.5 to 7.0 profile.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range suitable for a general transactional letter, successfully utilizing terms such as 'extension', 'agreement', 'workload', and 'internal wiring'. However, there are some minor lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'renting agreement' instead of 'rental agreement' or 'lease', and 'provide me a help' instead of 'help me' or 'assistance'. There is also a spelling slip ('buld' instead of 'bulb'). While attempts are made to use task-specific vocabulary, the range lacks the flexibility, precision, and sophistication characteristic of higher bands. Nevertheless, the lexical choices are sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly without impeding the reader's understanding, earning a solid Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional-like or causal construction in 'Our organization recently got a huge order to build trains and for that reason i have to stay in the same site to manage the process.' Control over basic grammar and punctuation is generally evident, but there are noticeable errors including capitalization slips ('i'), punctuation oversights, and awkward preposition usage, such as 'on 3 floor' instead of 'on the 3rd floor'. The clause construction 'as i like to have a dinner in my balcony' also contains a minor article error ('in my balcony' instead of 'on my balcony'). Despite these persistent errors, they rarely impede communication, allowing the response to secure a Band 6.0.
