Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear owner,
I am writing to request you that I would need to extent the six-month agreement. I started living here arond 4 months ago and I would need to stay here for extra two months because I will have to complete a project after graduating from my college. So I have to inform you prior to end of the agreement to prevent any extra charges.
As I mentioned, because of the project, I will have to stay here. This project is significantly important for all students to receive their graduation certificate.
Apart from that, I would like to inform about a problem that I am facing in the appartment. The water shower has broken down which create an issue during taking shower. I would appreciate it if you could arrange a plumber to repair the shower pipe.
I look forward to hearing from you as soon as possible.
Your sincerely,
Ashutosh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt, albeit with some redundancy and slight over-explanation. You successfully state how long you wish to extend the rental for ("extra two months"), explain the reason for the change ("complete a project after graduating from my college"), and mention a maintenance issue ("The water shower has broken down"). The tone is appropriately semi-formal for a landlord-tenant correspondence, even though the opening salutation "Dear owner" is slightly unnatural compared to "Dear Landlord" or using a personal name. All parts of the task are adequately addressed, earning a solid Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter follows a clear logical organization from the initial purpose of the message to the details of the problem and a closing call to action. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as the rental extension and the maintenance issue. However, there is some repetition that affects the flow of ideas, specifically repeating the explanation about the project in consecutive sentences: "I will have to stay here for extra two months because I will have to complete a project..." and "As I mentioned, because of the project, I will have to stay here." Cohesive devices are functional but basic, which places this text securely in the Band 6 range.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. However, there are notable word choice errors and unnatural collocations. For example, you wrote "extent" instead of "extend", "arond" instead of "around", and "during taking shower" instead of "while taking a shower" or "when showering". Furthermore, phrasing like "significantly important" is acceptable, but "of great importance" or "crucial" would be more natural. While communication is never impeded, these lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips prevent the score from reaching a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as using subordinate clauses with "because" and conditional structures like "I would appreciate it if you could...". However, there are several grammatical errors scattered throughout the text. For instance, "I am writing to request you that I would need to extent" contains unnecessary verb complementation and tense confusion; it should simply be "I am writing to request an extension." Additionally, you wrote "inform about a problem" missing the reflexive object "inform you about", and "Your sincerely" contains a possessive determiner error instead of the correct "Yours sincerely". These frequent errors place your grammar performance at a Band 5.5.
