Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, successfully covering the desired rental duration, the reason for the change in plans, and reporting a maintenance issue. However, the development of these ideas is uneven. While the duration and the background regarding the project extension are mentioned, the explanation of the changing plans and the apartment problem lack full elaboration and clarity. For instance, the mention of the water tank issue is slightly rushed and cuts off mid-sentence at the end of the letter. To reach a higher band, all bullet points need to be extended with fully supported details and a complete resolution.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows a recognizable format for semi-formal correspondence. Paragraphing is utilized to separate the introduction, background details, and the maintenance issue, which helps structure the content. However, cohesion at times feels mechanical or repetitive, relying on standard transitional markers like 'Firstly,' 'Furthermore,' and 'Therefore.' Furthermore, referencing is occasionally imprecise, and the sudden truncation at the very end of the text disrupts the natural progression. To improve, the writer should employ a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that thoughts are carried through to a logical conclusion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the communicative task, allowing the writer to convey simple and some less common ideas, such as 'manufacturing company' and 'project timeline'. However, there are notable limitations in lexical control, including word choice and spelling errors such as 'tanents' instead of tenants, 'tarrace' instead of terrace, and 'regaing' instead of regarding. There is also occasional awkward phrasing like 'increase my stay'. These errors do not impede communication overall, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher score. To improve, the student should expand their range of less common lexical items and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating clauses connected by 'although,' 'however,' and 'therefore.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as lower-case letters for the pronoun 'i' and capitalized months or mid-sentence words inappropriately, as well as minor preposition and article lapses like 'in the headoffice' and 'at tarrace'. Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede overall communication. To move to a higher band, the writer should increase the frequency of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over punctuation, capitalization, and articles.
