IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.
Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter
- say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
- explain why your plans have changed
- tell the owner about a problem in the apartment
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to extend my lease agreement to twelve months instead of a six-month tenancy.
I have been living here for the past five months now, as this is a very convenient place to commute to my workplace every day. A few days ago, I was offered a permanent position at Sanofi International Company, Toronto. While signing the agreement, I was not sure if I was going to be selected for the permanent position at the same company. Secondly, the neighbourhood in this particular location is quite good. Even though they are busy with their schedules, they end up helping me anytime I need them. So, would you be able to make some amendments to the contract and extend it for more months, please?
Moreover, I want to talk about one problem which I have been facing for the past two weeks. There is a continuous leak under the sink, which is making it hard to clean the kitchen properly. It seems to be an apartment issue, so we need to fix this issue as soon as possible.
Thank you so much for your assistance, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Devanshi Vasani

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the task in a natural, appropriate tone. You successfully state that you wish to extend the lease to twelve months, explain the change in plans regarding your permanent job offer at Sanofi International Company along with neighbourhood convenience, and clearly inform the owner about the continuous leak under the kitchen sink. All three bullet points are covered well, with clear extensions and supporting details provided for each point. To reach an even higher standard, some ideas could have been elaborated with slightly more concise and purposeful integration, ensuring that every detail directly serves the purpose of the letter without over-expanding on minor personal background.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Ideas are grouped sensibly into paragraphs, moving smoothly from the purpose of the letter to your background and job change, followed by the maintenance issue, and finally a polite sign-off. You use appropriate cohesive devices such as "Moreover", "While signing the agreement", and "Even though" to connect your ideas. While the flow is generally natural, the transition between your employment news and the neighbourhood description feels slightly disjointed. To move further up, referencing and paragraph links could be handled with even greater subtlety and seamless integration.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, successfully using less common lexical items such as "lease agreement", "permanent position", "amendments", and "continuous leak". Word choices are generally appropriate for a formal tenant-to-landlord communication, and your spelling and word formation are accurate. However, the vocabulary occasionally relies on slightly standard or repetitive phrasing, such as "quite good" and "fix this issue". To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations and precise idiomatic or academic equivalents for everyday descriptions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You make effective use of a variety of complex sentence structures, including conditional or temporal clauses like "While signing the agreement, I was not sure if..." and concessive clauses such as "Even though they are busy...". There are frequent error-free sentences, and your control of verb forms, tenses, and punctuation is generally strong, showing good management of both past and present timelines. A few minor stylistic rigidities persist, but these do not impede communication. To push towards a higher band, ensure absolute precision in complex multi-clause sentences and maintain a consistently polished formal grammatical register.
