Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Sharma,

I am writing this letter to inform you regarding the extension of my stay in your apartment. I rented this apartment for six months but now I want to live here at least one year because of urgent work.

Firstly, I changed my plan because I got better interview for higher position in multinational company which offer high salary package along with perks. Secondly, I like your apartment as it provide all facilites which I wanted. Apart from it, it is located near the bus station, grocery stores , restraunt and shopping mall. It is too conveinent for me buy anything in less time.

I want to share a problem which I faced in this apartment. It is parking issues. Parking space is very congested because of which I have to pay attention to park the car very carefully. This is very time consuming issue.

I hope you will give me permission to live here. I am eagarly waiting for your response.

Your sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, earning a solid rating. You clearly state how long you wish to extend your stay by mentioning 'at least one year', explain why your plans changed due to a new job opportunity and your appreciation of the apartment's location, and outline a specific issue regarding the congested parking space. Your position and overall request are clear throughout the letter. To reach higher bands, the ideas could be extended with even greater detail and richer elaboration, particularly regarding the apartment issue and your employment change, ensuring that every point is fully explored without minor over-generalisations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement that bridges the criteria of a solid band and a higher one. The text is divided logically into paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs addressing your reasons and the parking problem, and a proper sign-off. You use basic cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Firstly' and 'Secondly', to organise your points. However, the progression occasionally feels slightly mechanical due to simple linking phrases and repetitive sentence openings. To achieve the next level, you need to employ a wider range of cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that referencing between sentences is smoother and less abrupt.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You display an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for general transactional writing, successfully attempting less common items such as 'multinational company', 'perks', and 'congested'. However, there are noticeable vocabulary and spelling errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'facilites' instead of facilities, 'restraunt' instead of restaurant, and 'conveinent' instead of convenient. Additionally, some word choices and collocations could be more natural, such as writing 'got better interview' instead of 'secured a better interview' or 'had a better interview'. Improving spelling accuracy and refining word choice will elevate your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

Your writing shows a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic structures and tenses. You successfully construct sentences with subordinate clauses, such as 'I like your apartment as it provide all facilites which I wanted'. Nevertheless, there are some grammar errors in your text, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'it provide' instead of 'it provides', missing articles such as 'for higher position' instead of 'for a higher position', and minor prepositional or phrasing slips like 'park the car very carefully' or 'eagarly waiting'. These errors rarely impede communication, placing your grammar firmly at this level. To improve further, aim for more error-free complex structures.
