IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.
Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter
- say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
- explain why your plans have changed
- tell the owner about a problem in the apartment
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Smith,
I am writing this letter to request to change my tenancy agreement that is due next month.
Initially, I planned to stay for six months beacuse of my job contract. But due to my permanent job now, I do not need to relocate. I have liked this place because of the pleasant environment and especially it cut down my transit time as it is near to my workplace. So, I wanted to check with you if I can sign the lease for another two years.
Fortunately, I have been lucky and selected for the permanent position that changed my plans to move. My employer was satisfied with my performance that made him to promote me as a full-time employee, so I am planning to work with this company for atleast two years.
Overall, the apartment is in good condition except for the water pressure in the washroom tap. It has been getting slower from past few days, which makes me irritating because I have to wait longer inside. I hope you will get it fixed soon.
I hope that I will be hearing from you soon.
Kind regards,
Mandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You successfully covered all parts of the task, meeting the prompt's requirements well. You clearly stated that you wish to rent the apartment for another two years, explained that your job contract became permanent, and mentioned the problem regarding the water pressure in the washroom tap. Your ideas are relevant and generally extended, showing a clear purpose throughout the letter. However, some ideas show a slight tendency towards repetition, particularly when explaining the change in plans across consecutive paragraphs ("beacuse of my job contract" and "selected for the permanent position that changed my plans to move"). To reach the highest bands, you could streamline these explanations to ensure every sentence introduces fully distinct supporting points without reiteration.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
Your letter has a coherent overall arrangement, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the opening to the sign-off. You used paragraphing to separate different topics, such as the lease extension, the reason for the change, and the maintenance issue. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or features faulty transitions. For instance, the transition between paragraphs feels slightly disjointed because the explanation of the job situation is split and repeated. Referencing could also be smoother, as some connective phrases like "So, I wanted to check" rely on conversational cohesive devices rather than a fluid progression. Organizing your thoughts into more tightly unified paragraphs would elevate the structural flow of your writing.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You demonstrated an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using functional terms like "tenancy agreement", "relocate", and "workplace". You made some attempts to use less common vocabulary, though this was accompanied by occasional lexical inaccuracies. For example, spelling errors such as "beacuse" and "atleast" appear in the text, and phrasing like "makes me irritating" contains a word form error where an adjective ending should be used instead of an active participle. These errors do not impede communication, as your meaning remains clear throughout, but refining your control of word forms and brushing up on common spelling words will help you secure higher marks in this category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You used a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable ability to construct multi-clause sentences, such as "I have liked this place because of the pleasant environment and especially it cut down my transit time..." There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. Examples include minor prepositional or structural awkwardness, such as "near to my workplace" (where "near" is sufficient) and tense consistency issues like "It has been getting slower from past few days" (which should be "over the past few days"). You showed good control over basic structures, and introducing greater variety in complex syntactic forms while tightening your command over prepositions will enhance your overall grammatical score.
