Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear sir,
I am writing about my rental agreement for the flat on king street. I have really enjoyed living here over five months ago. I would like to ask whether it would be possible to extend my stay for another twelve months.
When I first moved in, I expected to live in city for a half year but everything suddenly changed as my general manager offers me full-time job position, which I have happily accepted. Therefore, I would like to extend my six-month agreement to one year.
I would also like to you know about a problem about a water leakage in the kitchen area. For the last two days, some of the water started collecting on the side of floor. I am worried that it may cause damage to the floor if it is not repaired soon.
Thank you for your help. I look forward to hearing from you.
Your sincerely,
Rushi

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly state that you wish to extend the rental agreement for another twelve months, explain the change in your plans due to a full-time job offer from your general manager, and inform the owner about the water leakage in the kitchen. The ideas are relevant and generally well-supported, giving a clear purpose and position throughout the letter. To reach a higher level, the explanation of the job change and the problem description could be slightly more extended and developed with additional specific details.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose corresponding to the bullet points in the prompt, resulting in a coherent overall arrangement. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate your introduction, plan extension reasons, the apartment problem, and your closing remarks. Cohesive devices such as 'When I first moved in', 'Therefore', and 'I would also like to' are used effectively to connect your ideas, although slightly more varied referencing could enhance the overall flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
An adequate range of vocabulary is used for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You make successful attempts at less common vocabulary such as 'rental agreement', 'extend my stay', and 'water leakage'. However, there are some word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'over five months ago' instead of 'over the past five months', 'live in city' missing an article, and 'general manager offers me' where past tense 'offered' is required. These minor errors do not impede communication, but eliminating them would elevate your lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses such as 'which I have happily accepted'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including tense inconsistency ('offers me' instead of 'offered me'), preposition usage ('problem about' instead of 'problem with'), and minor mechanical issues like the capitalisation of 'king street'. However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, showing good partial control characteristic of this level, while a wider variety of error-free complex structures is needed to move further ahead.
