IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr.Johnsons,

I hope you are doing well.

I am writing to request you for an extension of agreement to stay in your apartment. I’ve been staying here for five months and after a month, our six months of agreement will be due. I wish to extend for another six months because my employer extended my work project for another six months. Since my work extended, I’d rather stay here than looking for another apartment, moreover, you don’t need to find another tenants for your apartment.

Aside from my request of extension, I have some concerns to raise which is the sink in the toilet because it is not draining well. I hope you can come to visit and bring someone to fix this issue. You can come during the day when I’ll be at work or you can message me the available date and time you can visit.

Thank you for a kind consideration and hoping for a positive feedback from your side.

Yours faithfully,

Jessica

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You successfully covered all parts of the task prompt. You clearly stated how long you wish to extend the rental agreement by mentioning another six months, explained that your plans changed because your employer extended your work project, and informed the owner about the maintenance issue with the toilet sink draining poorly. Your purpose in writing is evident throughout the letter, and your ideas are sufficiently extended and supported with relevant details, such as offering to let the owner visit during work hours. While the explanation regarding the lease timing could be slightly smoother, your response meets the core requirements effectively and maintains a clear, appropriate tone suitable for a semi-formal request to a property owner.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter shows a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas. You divided the response into appropriate paragraphs, starting with a polite greeting and your main request, moving on to the maintenance issue in the second paragraph, and closing with a polite sign-off. You used some cohesive devices and referencing appropriately, such as 'Since my work extended' and 'Aside from my request of extension'. However, the flow is occasionally slightly mechanical, and some transitions like 'moreover, you don't need to find another tenants' run clauses together rather than linking them smoothly with more sophisticated cohesive ties. Fully achieving a higher band would require more seamless transitions and a slightly more natural progression between distinct topics.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You demonstrated an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using functional terms like 'request', 'extension', 'agreement', and 'maintenance issue'. You attempted some less common vocabulary, but there were noticeable errors in word choice and phrasing, such as 'another tenants' (which should be singular 'another tenant') and 'a kind consideration' (which is slightly unnatural collocation compared to 'kind consideration'). There are also minor stylistic awkwardnesses, such as 'after a month, our six months of agreement will be due'. These lexical inaccuracies and occasional non-standard collocations prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher level of precision and flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You used a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic structures and successfully incorporating subordinate clauses using words like 'because' and 'when'. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing patterns throughout the text. For example, 'request you for an extension' uses an incorrect prepositional pattern, 'than looking for' should ideally match the gerund or infinitive structure more fluidly, and 'raise which is the sink' contains a structural agreement flaw. Punctuation and article usage also display minor slips, such as addressing the owner as 'Mr.Johnsons' with an unnecessary plural 's'. These errors do not impede overall communication, but they occur frequently enough to keep the grammar score at this level.
