Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. John

I am writing to ask if it would be possible to you to extend my rental contract for another six month, as you know my current agreement is going to end next month.

Actually i am here for a short-term project for six months and planning to move another city, but my employer gave me a permanent position in the company and i decided to stay here for next six months.

I always love to live in this apartment it is prefect for my needs, but i want to mention a problem which i am facing for last two weeks. The water heater is not working properly i tried to reset the water heater but that did'nt work. If you send someone who can inspect the heater and fix it that would be great for me.

I hope you consider my apartment contract extention and resolve the water heating issue.

looking forward for your response

Your's Faithful

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, fulfilling the three key bullet points in a clear and organised manner. You clearly state the desired extension length of another six months, explain the change in your plans regarding your employer offering you a permanent position instead of leaving for another city, and inform the owner about the faulty water heater. All bullet points are appropriately covered with relevant ideas, though some areas could benefit from further elaboration to fully meet the highest standards. For instance, the explanation of the water heater problem is slightly brief. However, your position and purpose remain clear and appropriate throughout the letter format, ensuring a solid performance for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You make effective use of paragraphing to separate different themes, such as the contract extension, the change in your professional plans, and the maintenance issue with the water heater. Cohesive devices are generally well managed, allowing the reader to follow your train of thought easily from the opening salutation to the closing sign-off. While referencing and linking could occasionally be smoother—such as by using more varied connectors between clauses rather than relying heavily on commas or basic conjunctions—the overall arrangement remains coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, providing sufficient range to communicate your message effectively. You attempt some less common vocabulary items such as "extend my rental contract", "permanent position", and "inspect the heater", which demonstrate an appropriate tone for a formal or semi-formal request to a landlord. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice inaccuracies, such as writing "prefect" instead of "perfect", using lowercase "i", and punctuation errors in words like "did'nt". These minor lexical and orthographic slips prevent the vocabulary score from reaching a higher band, though communication is never impeded.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a workable mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable command of sentence structures. You successfully employ complex clauses, such as conditional structures ("If you send someone who can inspect the heater...") and subordinate clauses of reason ("as you know my current agreement is going to end..."). There are, however, some recurring errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles, run-on sentences joined only by commas, and an incorrect sign-off phrase ("Your's Faithful"). Despite these persistent errors, they rarely impede communication, and your control over basic verb tenses remains generally sound throughout the letter.
