  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Ms/Mrs Gill,

I am writing this letter to discuss my current six-month agreement and to request an extention of my tenancy. I want to extend my agreement for next 12 months, Which is staring from November 2026 to October 2027. I would like to sign a new contract with your permission.

Initially, I was planning to move another city for my work related reasons. However, the circumstances are changed, since I recently received a job in this area. This job not only close to the apartment but also has flexible schedule. Aditionally, I love the apartment and the people of my neighbourhood are very friendly. This is because I do not want to leave it.

I would also like to bring few problems in your attention. There is a tap in the washroom, which is countinuosly leaking especially at night. Another problem is mirror of kitchen window is broken from long time and mosquitoes keep coming inside, which cause disturbance in my sleep.

I would like to hearing back from you.

Yours Faithfully,

Sukhveer Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter clearly addresses all three requirements: you request a further 12 months, explain that your plans changed because you obtained a local job, and report two maintenance problems. The reasons for staying are relevant and supported with details about the job, the apartment, and the neighbourhood, so your purpose remains clear throughout. The repair issues are also specific, particularly the leaking washroom tap and the broken kitchen-window mirror. To make the response even more complete, state more directly what action you would like the owner to take and, if possible, when the repairs should be arranged. This would strengthen the practical purpose of the complaint while preserving the clear, appropriately formal request already made.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear sequence: the request comes first, the changed circumstances are explained next, and the apartment problems are described before the closing. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking expressions such as “Initially,” “However,” and “Another problem” help the reader follow the points. Some connections are less smooth, however. “This is because I do not want to leave it” repeats the preceding idea rather than developing it, and the final request for a reply does not explicitly connect to the repairs or the proposed contract. Use references and transitions that show how each detail supports your request, and close by asking clearly about both the extension and the maintenance issues.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the situation, including “six-month agreement,” “extend,” “circumstances,” “flexible schedule,” and “leaking.” These choices make the purpose and problems understandable. There are, however, several spelling and word-choice errors that reduce precision, such as “extention,” “Aditionally,” and “countinuosly.” Some phrases are also not natural collocations: “bring few problems in your attention” and “mirror of kitchen window” could be expressed more idiomatically. Aim to learn common phrases for tenancy correspondence, such as “bring a problem to your attention” and “request that the repair be arranged.” More accurate spelling and collocation would make the letter sound more polished.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, for example, “This job not only close to the apartment but also has flexible schedule” and the sentence explaining the broken mirror and mosquitoes. The meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. In “I want to extend my agreement for next 12 months,” the article and preposition pattern need correction; “Which is staring…” is an incorrectly capitalised and incomplete clause; and “I would like to hearing back” uses the wrong verb form. There are also agreement and tense problems in “the circumstances are changed” and “which cause disturbance.” Review articles, subject–verb agreement, and verb patterns after “would like,” while keeping the useful variety of sentence forms.
