Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear john,

I am writing this letter to inform you that i would like to stay longer than six months in your apartment due to my studies.

First, we had agreement for six-month but now, i need to stay here for more four months. I promised I'll leave this apartment by the end of january.

The reason behind this, my studies has been extended till january and this apartment is close to my both college and work. It is not right decision to look for another apartment for just four months, because once I completed my study i will go back to my country. Therefore, i do not need any rented place here.

Furthermore, I wanted to let you know that there is water leakage problem in kitchen taps which is really stressful and wastage of water as well. So I will appreciate if you can look at this matter too.

Thankyou for your time and consideration. I will look forward to your reply.

Sincerley,

Simranjeet kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three requirements: you request an extension, explain that your studies have been extended and that the apartment is convenient, and report a leak in the kitchen taps. Your intended rental period is clear in “four months” and “by the end of January,” and the reason for leaving afterward is also relevant. These details give the owner a clear picture of your plans. To make the request more fully developed, state the proposed new end date directly and explain whether you are asking to renew the agreement on the same terms. The problem is identified, but a brief indication of when it began or how urgently it needs attention would make that part more informative.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information is arranged in a sensible sequence: the request comes first, followed by your plans and reasons, then the maintenance issue and closing. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these points, and linking expressions such as “First,” “Furthermore,” and “Therefore” make the progression easy to follow. This is a coherent overall arrangement. However, some connections feel mechanical, and the opening paragraph repeats the request before the next paragraph gives its details. The reference in “The reason behind this” is also slightly vague. For a more flexible flow, combine related information and use clearer links, such as “As my course has been extended…” before explaining why moving would be impractical.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a practical letter, including “agreement,” “extended,” “consideration,” and “water leakage.” The meaning remains clear, and the tone is generally polite. Some word choices and collocations are less natural, however: “for more four months” and “look at this matter” do not express the ideas idiomatically, while “wastage of water” is awkward in this context. Spelling and capitalization also need attention in “john,” “Thankyou,” and “Sincerley.” More precise, natural phrases would make the letter sound more fluent and professional; for example, say “for a further four months” and ask the owner to “arrange a repair.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including the explanation beginning “because” and the conditional idea “if you can look at this matter.” These structures help communicate the reasons and request. However, errors in agreement, articles, tense, and sentence construction remain noticeable. For example, “my studies has been extended” should use a plural verb, and “we had agreement” needs an article or a different construction. “Once I completed my study” also needs a more suitable tense and plural form. Capitalize “I” consistently, and check punctuation around clauses. Practise editing each sentence for subject–verb agreement and verb tense, while retaining the range of sentence forms you are attempting.
