Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Maran Ron,

I am writing this email regarding the extention of our rent agreement for more than one year as I now wished to stay a longer in this province due to some personal reasons.

Firstly, I would like to mention that I want to increase the agreement stay period for one year because my job has been allocated permanently to this current rental. In addition to this, I would like to stay for this coming year which is May 2026 to April 2027.

Considering my circumstances, I now have to drop my plan of getting out after 6 months as my job demands me to visit the worplace 5 days in a row every week which is convenient for me if i stay in this rental because it is just 10 minutes driveway and 15 minutes by walk. Moreover, my company offered for vaccation for my parents so they will be here in october for few weeks.

I would like to demonstrate one major problem about the apartment that is the elevator. It does not work properly on weekdays especially in morning and I have to take the stairs which is tiring as I live on the 16th floor. I would be glad if you consider this matter .

Thank you for your time and consideration

Yours sincerely,

Alice Mills

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three required points: you request a further year, explain that your job is now permanent nearby, and report the unreliable elevator. The dates, May 2026 to April 2027, make the requested period clear, while the commute details and your parents’ visit add relevant context. The purpose remains clear throughout, and the problem is described with a practical impact: you live on the 16th floor and must use the stairs. To make the response more fully developed, clarify the connection between your parents’ visit and the decision to extend, and state more directly what action you would like the owner to take about the elevator. The opening also says “more than one year,” which is less precise than the one-year period specified later.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall sequence: the opening states its purpose, the middle explains the extension and changed plans, and the final paragraph raises the apartment problem before the closing. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these points, and connectors such as “Firstly,” “In addition to this,” and “Moreover” show how details relate. Some linking is mechanical, however, and the first two paragraphs repeat the request to extend. The relationship between the parents’ visit and your changed plans is also not fully clear. For a stronger progression, group the requested dates and reasons more tightly, then move directly to the elevator issue and a specific request for repair.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the letter and includes useful task-related language such as “rent agreement,” “permanently,” “circumstances,” and “does not work properly.” These choices communicate the main points, and the reader can understand the problem and its effect. However, several word-choice and spelling errors reduce precision, including “extention,” “allocated permanently to this current rental,” “driveway,” and “vaccation.” Some phrases are also unnatural for a formal request, particularly “increase the agreement stay period.” Aim for more natural collocations and accurate spelling, such as “extend the tenancy,” “assigned to this location,” and “a 10-minute drive.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause with “as” and a conditional request beginning “I would be glad if…”. Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the longer explanation of your commute is understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, though. For example, “as I now wished to stay a longer” has an incorrect verb form and construction; “I now wish to stay longer” would be clearer. In “I want to increase the agreement stay period,” the noun phrase is not formed correctly, and “if i stay” needs the pronoun capitalised. Review verb tense, sentence construction, and punctuation around the closing request to improve accuracy.
