Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Smith,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to extend my stay at your place for next one year atleast. As I leased it on a six-month agreement which is going to end in the next end of month.

The area where i am renting now seems to very fascinating to me and full of facilities. All the emenities are closer enough in the distance of few minutes walking. Moreover, it is very easy for me to commute to my workplace because of frequent bus service which makes unable me to buy my own motorbike.

However, I have a trouble with the airconditioning in the building. In upcoming weeks, summer is going to start so please get a time to look after this problem as it is not cooling enough and after few minutes runing smoothly, it turns off automatically.

I would really appriciate your work to fix it and also i hope you will allow me to stay longer in the apartment.

Thank you,

Baldeep

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three required points: you request an extension, explain that the area and transport suit you, and report that the air conditioner stops working. The request to stay “for next one year” gives a clear duration, and the problem is described with useful detail. The explanation for changing your plans is relevant, although it focuses mainly on convenience and could be developed by stating more directly why you now need to remain in the area. The letter is appropriately directed to the owner and maintains a polite purpose. To make the response more complete, state the proposed new end date or total rental period and make the request for the owner’s agreement more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening request, a paragraph explaining your reasons, a paragraph about the apartment problem, and a polite closing. This makes the main points easy to locate. Linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “However” help show how the ideas relate, and the progression from the extension request to the repair issue is logical. Some connections are less smooth, particularly the shift from the lease ending to the reasons for staying, and the final sentence combines the repair request with the extension request. For stronger progression, keep each purpose distinct and use a closing paragraph that clearly summarises both requests. A few references, such as “it” in the opening, could also be made more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to renting and daily life, including “six-month agreement,” “commute,” “frequent bus service,” and “airconditioning.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and phrases such as “full of facilities” show an attempt to use a broader range. However, several spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “emenities,” “appriciate,” and “fascinating” for a place that is convenient or appealing. Some combinations are also unnatural, such as “closer enough in the distance of few minutes walking” and “get a time to look after this problem.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Aim for accurate collocations and check spelling before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, for example the sentence beginning “Moreover” and the explanation of how the air conditioner behaves. The overall meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. In “which is going to end in the next end of month,” the time expression and sentence structure are faulty; “the lease ends at the end of next month” would be clearer. Other examples include “seems to very fascinating” (missing “be”) and “which makes unable me” (incorrect word order and missing object). There are also issues with articles and sentence boundaries. Practise building accurate clauses with “because,” “which,” and “so,” and check verb patterns and word order in each sentence.
